USB Mic not getting recognized over internal Laptop Mic

This seems like it should be a dumb question, but I'm banging my head.

I wanted to compare 1) using an external microphone plugged into sound card Andrea NC-91 2) external mic plugged into USB adapter [Andrea NC-91 and USB Line Level Adapter] and 3) external USB mic Andrea NC-7100.

Regrettably, I'm having trouble getting DNS 8.1 to recognize the mics when going through the USB since it keeps wanting to pick up the internal Mic on my Dell Latitude D600 running Win 2000. If I plug directly into the sound card, it to works as expected turning off the internal mic.

Any ideas?

Dragon NaturallySpeaking uses the default Windows audio device. The easiest thing to do is to run the audio setup wizard whenever you change audio devices. The first step of this process that you choose the audio source.

Frankly, you are trying to test inferior equipment. The NC91 is highly rated buy Dragon but this rating is laughed at by experienced users of speech recognition. The NC-7100 is sort of acceptable in very quiet conditions. You cannot use a line level adapter as those microphones require microphone level input.

Thanks Martin, I was hoping

Thanks Martin,

I was hoping running the wizard was not the easist thing to do, but that is essentially what i had to do and created multiple User/source combinations.

Thanks for your comments on the mics. Not sure what you meant by line level adapter comment. We are using it with the NC91 which came with our DNS kit. The other mic we are going to test is the Andrea DA-350 since our application will eventually be used in a car. We're just waiting on the electrical adapter so we can test in the office. Any comments regarding that choice of microphone or is there another we should be looking at?

For anyone else reading, as expected, the NC-7100 (USB) performed better than the NC91 (sound card input) with or without the adapter (sound card input to USB converter). It will be at least a few days before we test the Andrea Array Mic DA-350 (sound card input).

Art.

In your initial post in this thread you mentioned line level when you said:
"I wanted to compare 1) using an external microphone plugged into sound card Andrea NC-91 2) external mic plugged into USB adapter [Andrea NC-91 and USB Line Level Adapter]"

Most microphones designed for Line Level input require an amplifier when used with a computer.

You would benefit from doing research on microphones for speech recognition use in automobiles. I know the engineer who was in charge of the Andrea Electronics product development for automobiles. The project was basically abandoned because accuracy with far field microphones in automobiles was poor. You cannot defeat the laws of physics. The further the voice is from the microphone element, the less pressure there will be on the element and the chance of stray sounds to enter the pickup pattern increases greatly.

The NC-7100 and NC-91 use the same microphone element and housing. The difference is obviously the USB ADC bypassing a noisy sound chip within the computer enclosure.
