Problem with Dragon 9
I recently purchased Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9, preferred. I've been working through a number of problems. One that is annoying is that sometimes it crashes, and when it does, none of my other applications -- my browsers, word processing program, e:mail program, etc.-- can fill the full window of my Monitor, unless I reboot the computer. Instead, the space that was covered by Dragon is left empty, so that I can see my desktop in that space. Since I have Dragon at the top of my monitor screen, I now have about 3/4 of an inch across the top of my monitor screen unused. I can't maximize my other applications -- browser, e:mail program, word processing program --or drag them in any way to fill up the space.
I thought maybe Dragon has left something behind. I did a control-alt-delete to see all of the application still runring, thinking maybe if I can identify one as a Dragon application, and if I deleted it, that would obviate my need to reboot the computer. In other words, even though Dragon has crashed, maybe it has left something behind that I can easily delete However, I cannot identify a Dragon application in the list of application still running on my computer. There's a ctfmon.exe, issch.exe,CLPtray.exe, cpf.exe, and many others, all of which may be totally unrelated to Dragon.
Any help here is greatly appreciated, as this need to reboot every time Dragon crashes make me not want to use it. I never had this problem with my earlier version of Dragon.

I assume you're using using
I assume you're using using Windows XP. Open the Windows Task Manager (control-alt-delete), click the Processes tab, highlight natspeak.exe, press end process.
Yes, I am using Windows XP.
Yes, I am using Windows XP. Service Pack 2. I guess the problem was that I did a control-alt-delete, and didn't see natspeak.exe there. Now maybe I missed it, but I looked pretty closely. Hmmm. I thought maybe there was some other Dragon item that was open, but which I didn't recognize.
When you say that DNS 9
When you say that DNS 9 crashes, what exactly does "crash" mean in your case? "Crash" is a very ambiguous term and covers a lot of territory. It could be Dragon. It could be Windows. It could be a video problem. It could be anything. You need to be more specific and especially in giving step-by-step explanations of what happens and/or what leads up to this crash. What is the error message that you're getting, if any? Is it Microsoft Windows related? Is it specifically a Dragon error?
If Dragon is just unloading for what ever reason, or if it is crashing without giving an error message, send us the Dragon log. However, please only send the session in the Dragon log that is related to the crash. The Dragon log can be exceptionally long and contain information that requires a lot of searching. If you experienced another crash, go to the Dragon log and cut and paste the session from that date and time. Each session is logged by date and time in the Dragon log itself. Please don't make us hunt through 500 lines of code. Those of us who understand the Dragon log and what it means can tell you exactly what's happening as long as it's being recorded by DNS in the Dragon log.

That's fair enough. By
That's fair enough. By crash I meant that the application closed on me, abruptly, and of course, against my will. I don't recall an error message. And then I couldn't open my browsers or e:mail program to take up the space left by Dragon. I looked at the log, and it's so long now, I couldn't find the relevant portion. However, next time I crash if I have the same problem, I'll open the log immediately afterwards, and save the last few entries. That way they'll be no need to look for a needle in a haystack. My concern isn't the occasional crash (though I'm still not sure if my problems are occasional with version 9 or not), but rather, the adverse affect of the closure on my other applications, requiring me to reboot the computer, to make things ok.
When Dragon leaves a hole at
When Dragon leaves a hole at the top of your screen after "ending," have you tried right-clicking on an empty area of the desktop and then clicking "Refresh" in the context menu that appears?
Stan Schwart
I just tried it (clicking
I just tried it (clicking "refresh"), and it didn't work. I still can't get the browser, or any other application to fill up the space, absent my rebooting the computer.
It happened again tonight. This type, Dragon froze on me. I had to go control-alt-delete to then close down Dragon. At that point, I'm stuck unable to fill up the space left when Dragon closed, other than by rebooting my computer.
Here's some material from my Dragon Log (not 500 lines of code that Chuck didn't want to see
though I hope I didn't cut out something important), contemporaneous with the event (I have no idea what it means) or why the quirk where after Dragon closes, I can't fill up the space left by Dragon. These crashes have me concerned as they happen too often, and leave me needing to reboot my computer, because my other applications can't open fully to fill the page.

Try killing the explorer.exe
Try killing the explorer.exe process in task manager.
This will end the windows "shell" that is the GUI for xp.
To get it back, you may have to use the "task manager" again --- in task manager go to file>new task (run) and type "explorer" to resurrect it. Without it, you have no task-bar, desktop, icons etc.
There is a chance that it will re-launch itself.
Jonathan
Thanks for the idea. This
Thanks for the idea. This problem happened a few times when I first started using Dragon, online, but it hasn't happened recently. Dragon 9 is feeling (crossing my fingers) more stable. I think initially I was using the "voices" of dragon to read text, and that may have triggered some freezes. It's possible because I've stopped using the voices (text-to-speech), I haven't gotten the freezes. I will try using them again to see if I can duplicate the problem.
I noticed that one of the times the problem happens (where after Dragon closes, the browser cannot fill up the space left by Dragon) is when Dragon locks, and I have to use the task manager to close it (while a browser is open). I have been thinking that if I first close all other open applications, and then use task manager to close Dragon, the problem might not occur (with the space left at the top of the browser, where Dragon was functioning as a toolbar). Still, I haven't had a chance to test that approach. I will print out your suggestion and save it for possible trial.
I assume if Explorer does not relaunch, that then I would have to reboot the computer.
If explorer does not
If explorer does not re-launch, launch it yourself using the task manager as in my post. If I recall, that is the most likely scenario.
For fun, test it...kill explorer, witness the missing xp look and feel, and the total lack of any control (except task manager), then start explorer again using the task manager.
There will be no need to reboot.
Yes, I did try it for fun.
Yes, I did try it for fun. I deleted (through utilization of the Task Manager) the Explorer.exe file, saw all of my icons disappear, and then started up again per your instructions. That part worked exactly as you indicated -- the icons came back. So it is a possible approach, if I have the same problem in the future that I had when I initiated this thread. Thanks for the idea!
Well, I had the problem
Well, I had the problem again, with having to close Dragon (because it had frozen) through the task manager, and none of my browsers that I opened afterwards being able to fill the entire space of my monitor (the empty space was the space where Dragon had been, before my having to close it). The aproach of deleting explorer.exe (through the task manager), and then starting it again through the task manager solved the problem.
At least on the one try I've had here with this approach. It was nice not to have to reboot the computer. Thank you, Jonathan.

I have just bought Dragon version 9 myself and was wondering if anyone had an answer to this problem - I have tried all the Dragon knowledge base answers and nothing has fixed the problem - I tried disabling ctfmon.exe but was not able to uninstall msimtf.dll - received error message "DllUnregisterServer in msimtf.dll failed. Return began very suddenly one morning just as Charlie bucket was getting dressed schoolcode was: 0x80004005.
I am running office Pro 2003 and XP
On the other hand very cold weather that gives one an enormous appetiteI do receive error messages.
On starting dragon:
Script Error
Line 0
Position 1
at one stage this error came twice.
On crash/shutdown - a Dragon error message (complete with logo)
"natspeak.exe has encountered a problem and will proceed to shut down. Any unsaved data will be lost. we appologise for any inconvenience."
Can any one please advise?
With thanks,
Sean
We need more
We need more information. Exactly what flavor of NaturallySpeaking are you attempting to install (Standard, Preferred or Professional)? How fast is your computer and how much RAM do you have?
Assuming you meet the TRUE requirements (not necessarily the manufacturers recommended requirements), you may have an incompatibility problem with some other program or utility or your NaturallySpeaking installation may be corrupt. DNS9.1 Remover will remove every trace of NaturallySpeaking, including your user files, and bring you back to ground zero. Tracking down utilities that may be interfering with NaturallySpeaking can be a bit time consuming but you may be able to use the process of elimination, via the Processes Tab in the Task Manager, to locate the culprit.
Don't forget that you should close every possible process when installing any software. Many end-users are lazy about installing and wind up paying the price later.

To add to that, many people
To add to that, many people forget to shut down Anti-Virus and the firewall. There is a clear warning about this in the instructions. When installing, it is best to disable both, go off-line and then reboot. Using a program like StartUpCop will simplify doing this, as well as disabling start programs.

Thanks for that. I certainly
Thanks for that.
I certainly turned off the virus checker - but I didn't turn off the firewall.
I would like to avoid loosing my user files if at all possible.
I am pretty sure there is something that isn't disenabling, I am just having trouble tracking it down.
As to Dragon, I am using Preferred, version 9.10.000.141 SP1
As to my system, I only just bought it recently (February 2007), the CPU is a Core 2 Duo 1.86 GHz, with 2 Gig ram.
I have noticed in the dragon log "C:\Windows\speech\speech.dll" - could this be the culprit?
C:\Windows\speech\speech.dll
C:\Windows\speech\speech.dll should not be a problem.
Thanks again, Just to
Thanks again,
Just to correct, the error message on “crash” is closer to “Natspeake.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

It would seem the RPC server is unavailable? I have no Idea what that means or how to fix it.
Whilst not liking it, I will try uninstalling and re-installing.

I've had exactly the same
I've had exactly the same problem.
NatSpeak 9.5 crashing on XP with 9GB free space and 2GB Ram.
I've stopped all startup files from msconfig and reinstalled. Still crashes.
I get no error, but the application simply disappears, with nothing even left in the event viewer. Only the little space stays at the top of the screen.
Same logs information suggesting RPC timeouts or clashes with something else. In my case I think it has something to do with citrix VPN. I can work for hours with every application, but as soon as I VPN into the office NatSpeak fails within 30 seconds to 2 minutes. I wondered if it was Outlook communications, so I set it to work offline, but that did not help. The only common denominator was the Citrix VPN. I've raised a call but no one seems to be able to help.

Two thoughts come to mind:
1. Does the Citrix VPN by any chance change the screen resolution? Do you have the latest updated video drivers?
2. Is there any chance the Citrix VPN is contending for your sound card audio? If so, it would interfere with Dragon.

We don't see how Citrix
We don't see how Citrix VPN would change
the screen resolution or have any effect on the soundcard but one additional
thought comes to mind. Only the
professional versions of NaturallySpeaking are Citrix compatible. DNS Preferred is not Citrix compatible and
this might explain the problem.

I used to use PC Anywhere for remote support. It would not change resolution but it did take control of the video and changed the colors available. It was VERY sensitive to video drivers as I recall. Maybe Citrix is a similar style program where it needs a specific resolution or number of colors?
Just a thought.
Screen resolution from VPN

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. The screen resolution displayed on the host computer is what is being broadcast. It may not equal the screen resolution of the host.

NatSpeak9.5 crashing
Hi,
an interesting comment that DNS is not Citrix compatible except for the professional version. I've been searching the Nuance site and have not found a software compability list.
Certainly, the only time I get the error is when I am using the Citrix VPN client. I've tested this several times.
In the Dragon log it references an RPC server unavailbility, which cascades into the following:
1. COM returned an unexpected error code: Details are The RPC server is unavailable.
2. Exception thrown (d:\work\rh6\ns\shared\engsink.cpp, 1188).
3. An engine sink failed to unregister itself.
4. Timeout waiting for COMObjects to be removed from thread 1434.
5. Final Termination of temporary instance
Could the VPN cause a lockup with the RPC Server and therefore force the timeout?

CLICK HERE for the Dragon compatibility matrix. Under Specialized Application Support it shows only the Professional version is compatible with a Citrix thin client.

Yes. You need to upgrade to Professional to use Citrix.
