What a long strange trip it's been.

It's been an interesting week for me. I'm sure there are others that are cursing this week with the impending tax deadline and then Easter around the corner. I'm glad my tax responsibilities are already completed. One less thing to think about at this time of year for me. As to Easter, I think we each will deal with that according to our individual beliefs.
What's going on with the weather? It's gone crazy! One day it's nearly 90°F and the next it's lucky to make it to 60°F! I don't know whether to wear shorts or a parka. If this is global warming, then someone should explain the global freezing I'm having.
How much is all of this affecting Internet traffic? I notice that not only has this site slowed down, but so have several other sites that I oversee. Many are very very busy but they have slowed to nearly a trickle in the past week.
Perhaps the looming threat of another 'war' (this time with Iran) also has us on edge. Every time a 'war' seems on the horizon, none of us are sure what to do. It's not our everyday life. If it affects us that way, imagine the people that are having to live (or die) in the middle of it. I'm glad I'm not there.
I've been giving a lot of thought toward starting classes here on the site. Perhaps dedicating a forum specifically for courses. I'd think they could/should include beginning use of Dragon (and/or ViaVoice) to more advanced uses. Maybe we could even get into usage of Pro's scripting abilities. This would all take volunteers as I just don't have time to do it on my own. What are your thoughts what areas need to be covered? Any takers to author the courses? We can go further into this on another thread. I mention it here to introduce the idea to you.
Has anyone else noticed that on almost every movie or television show that has aliens, they amazingly almost always speak British English? What's with that anyway?
If you want to watch an entertaining show, watch House. That's the guy's last name (Gregory House, M.D.) - it's on USA network on Friday nights and Fox TV on Tuesday nights in Los Angeles (KTTV). It's about a very good doctor with a lot of whimsies and quirks, not to mention an addiction to pain pills; as well as some odd patients and cases. The amazing part (and a portion of why I mention this) is that Hugh Laurie is British, but speaks with an American accent! So he can't be alien (see previous paragraph).
Well, that's where my brain has traveled in the last week... how about yours?

There is a parallel to Itamar's ms-speech list -- frantic activity for a couple of months after the last Vista Beta followed, in the past few weeks, but absolute silence -- unless, of course, my membership has lapsed somehow. Guess everyone is just waiting now for the next shoe to drop

The weather certainly has gone weird. In Ireland, we had a very warm winter right up to the end of February, but March went totally berserk, and was more like January with snow, cold, hail, sleet and whatever you would like yourself. However it all turned in April, and we were back to our normal Spring. Naturally enough, we all blame global-warming.
What is now preoccupying minds on this side of the pond is the downturn of energy resources, and a new dependency on Russia for gas and oil supplies, and whether the UK and Ireland should go nuclear for energy.

I think we have all all noted this and are wondering why.
Certainly on this side of the pond, tax does not play a part at this time of year - that happens between October and January. Equally the threat of war has not impinged on many peoples' minds, except in respect of the constantly rising cost of energy, particularly petrol and diesel, the overheating of the economy, and the pressures that, particularly young, people are under in maintaining their employment, coupled with a long commuting. There is a general feeling of failure in voluntary community service, as people no longer have the time to be involved.
I believe that a lot of people are now more heavily involved with their families after a hard day's work, and are not able to pursue their normal interests in the way that they used to. I have certainly noticed this with my own children. They do need to be more involved with their families today in order to prevent juvenile delinquency.

A good idea. Certainly I would be prepared to do this with ViaVoice (except with Excel where the formulae still remain a total mystery to me due to my having a non-mathematical brain
).

Makes it much easier to understand
Hugh Laurie is a very popular comic actor, having cut his teeth with Blackadder, and was a great buddy of Stephen Fry in satirical comedies. He only recently decided to move to the States, as he felt that his brand of humour had exhausted itself in the UK. However not being a great TV watcher, I have not seen " House".

I'll keep you in mind as a ViaVoice volunteer.

House is an interesting show. Although the stories are clearly TV fiction, they bother me. The medicine is clearly wrong and have absolutely no correlation with how we practice medicine in the real world. In fact House could be a textbook for students on how not to think.
Although I enjoy the show, especially Mr. Laurie's quirky humor, I am concerned that a real patient will misinterpret the medical aspects. In particular House performs a series of dangerous, invasive, sometimes painful tests and treatments- almost at random.
This is not how medical thinking works! In the real world, I often see patients that are misinformed about their diagnosis and the necessary tests. Just think, you are scheduled to see your doctor for a test. Then you see Dr. House performing the same test on TV. You get the picture.
I won't get into the issues of a doctor popping pain pills......
Yeah, I know it is only TV, but I have to do this stuff every day with real people and lives.

I don't envy your job at all. I wouldn't be able to handle the pressures you have to be under.

Thanks! I really appreciate your comment. I often feel that people have no idea how hard it is- 7/24!
I have a lady in the hospital right now. The complexity of her case would even blow Dr. House away.

I wouldn't call him on a consult. He's too happy with his CT Scanner and he tries things to see if the patient dies or gets worse/better. Such a diagnostician!
I'd hope the real doctors are better than that!
