Windows Vista Hardware Recommendations

This article entitled "Build a Windows Vista System Today!"

is interesting, including this tidbit:
"Microsoft is encouraging hard drive makers to develop hybrid drives. Hybrid drives with a large flash memory cache on board, probably 128MB or larger"
Don't have access to a drive with a 128MB cache? Apparently you'll be able to substitute one of those USB2 key drives and the OS will use up to 128MB of that. No word on the relattive efficiency of the two approaches, but it may be something to keep in mind when planning hardware upgrades.

Is there no end to the need
Is there no end to the need to have HUGE amounts of memory? Makes me wonder if it would all work better if it were written in assembler code.

Skip,
Given that the technology has now become so complex, coupled with the overemphasis on "User Friendly," I think that we are now fully into the age of Abuser Friendly.

PS I am with you.
OK, prepare to tear your
OK, prepare to tear your hair out:
"Hybrid Hard Disks and Beyond"

"A cache size of at least 128MB is recommended, but drive manufacturers could conceivably incorporate caches as large as 4GB or more to store critical system data like registry or favorites info."
This facility will, of course, be useful for those who regularly visit several million favorites and never run registry repair and pruning utilities
But wait! It gets better yet:
"Intel's "Robson" cache takes a different approach, placing the NV cache directly onto the motherboard. With the entire operating system loaded onto flash memory, booting can occur directly from the cache. Once again, a minimum 128MB cache is recommended, but 2GB to 4GB sizes could provide more flexibibility."
A couple of hardware sites have been touting the idea of loading the entire OS onto flash disks, and now I see where the idea came from.

Like I said, we're firmly
Like I said, we're firmly into the era of abuser friendly.
