Is a USB Adapter a good idea for the system I have?
Hi:
I am a newbie in the voice recognition world. I currently own a Toshiba Portege M200 tablet PC with Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005.
The specifications for the computer are as follows:
Intel® Pentium® M @ 1.6GHz (Centrino)
512MB DDR PC2700 Module
Sound Card: AD1981B Codec Chip
I know absolutely nothing about sound cards, but in my research have discovered that many people recommend USB adapters unless you have a very high quality sound card. I have no idea whether the sound card I have is of “ high quality”.
I am just looking for some advice as to whether I should be purchasing a USB adapter or whether it is in fact necessary. Money isn't really the driving factor - but because I am very mobile - I like to carry as few gadgets as is possible.
Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to give
Dave

Dave, Your computer
Dave,
Your computer specifications are adequate for speech recognition. You will probably be much happier with 1GB of RAM when using Microsoft XP. However, your soundcard is probably in adequate. An easy way to test is to run a Windows sound recorder recording at CD-quality. Here are easy to follow directions:

A five second recording should have no obvious electronic noise. If it does, then you are a candidate for a USB sound pod. This assumes you already have a good microphone. Microphone that the supply of the software should be thought of as a starter microphone. As for the size of a USB pod, about half the size of your thumb for the body USB pod at:

That works nicely with an Andrea ANC 700 or ANC 750 as they fold nicely for portability. The absolute best headset for speech recognition is the Sennheiser Headset found at:
