Need the "User Workbook" for DNS Version 8

Peter Maddern's picture

Does anyone know of a source for the DNS Version 8 User Workbook (the documentation you'd give someone when training them on DNS)? I'm ideally looking for it in electronic format.

I've asked Scansoft in the UK but so far but so far, it doesn't look like it's available.

I'm going to create my own but this would get me a start.

I suspect that you will find

I suspect that you will find that most companies have spent considerable time and effort in producing their own training manuals and that they are only available either as part of a course or for ££££ (or $$$$). Certainly they are likely to be copyright and hence unlikely to be supplied in electronic form.
There is also the point that trainers/companies have developed their own individual styles of presentation which may not coincide with yours.

Here are a couple of sources for ideas – just for starters:

Dragon NaturallySpeaking for the Office Professional by Karl Barksdale

The link is to the version published in 200 (the only one available in the UK) but the exercises apply equally to DNS 8. see: http://www.speakingsolutions.com/books/thomson/dra...
for the DNS 8 version.

The Dan Newman Video Guides are good sources of inspiration.

Thanks a lot! Seeing your post, I did a search and came across this which is perhaps the site you saw?

Yes, it sounds like I have to get the right department. The pProblem is I live in the UK. A while ago, I asked a contact in Nuance/Scansoft UK who asked Nuance/Scansoft in the USA and then told me a version 8 user workbook was not available. I don't have any contacts in Nuance USA. I asked the my Nuance UK contact again recently and he has passed my enquiry to his manager in Scansoft UK but I haven't had a response yet.

Does anyone have any Nuance USA contacts? If not and Nuance UK don't get back to me, I might bight the bullet and order the version 8 manual from the above source.

Even if I eventually get this workbook, I'll probably use it as a starting reference for creating my own training materials from it and maybe from some of the other reference materials that respondents like Graham and Knowbrainer have mentioned.

Thanks again to all.

"this workbook is a document

"this workbook is a document used by and only available from certified ScanSoft® Partners."

Peter, Good luck in your hunt - I suspect that you may find that the above really should read"... only available to certified US ScanSoft® Partners". Some ScanSoft Partners (or whatever we are now called under Nuance) are created more equal than others - and the UK is a lower form of creation.

I think too that US VARs have to pay fairly heavily for this documentation which is designed to be sold as part of a training course. Years ago (DNS 3 & 4) the manuals were available in the UK as part of (paid for) training courses for Dragon VARs/Trainers but they don't seem to have made it across the Atlantic since. You might be better advised to "borrow" the topic list as a guide, save the £29 + shipping, and write your own manual from scratch.
