USB mic works; mic-in jack microphone doesn't (Toshiba laptop)

I have a Toshiba laptop with which I have been using a GN Netcom headset microphone happily until the last few months. Lately, I noticed that the microphone continues to work great while the laptop is on battery power, but recognition quality gets horrible when I switch to outlet power (and nonexistent as soon as the laptop's fan comes on). (This is after rotating electrical cord into the power brick 180°, as suggested by Martin, which helped a little, but didn't seem to cure the problem.) My laptop does not seem to have much battery power, otherwise I would just use that.

I next tested the microphone on my Dell desktop and found that it still works very good.

I next tried using a microphone which I bought from Circuit City (Logitech), that plugs into the USB port, and that works great with the laptop.

But the problem is, the Logitech microphone is very heavy and seems to clobber my ears. It's uncomfortable almost the minute I put it on, unlike the feathery GN Netcom microphone.

So I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a headset microphone that will take care of this problem and be comfortable. And also, wondering what happened and why the USB microphone will work but not non-USB microphone work.

Thanks for this great site!
Jasmine

Notebook batteries seem to last about 1 1/2 years. Have you thought about replacing your battery? Apparently it is struggling to charge itself and that is causing interference with your onboard sound chip. The Labtec with the USB is bypassing it.

There is a very simple solution. Add a VXI USB sound pod. This is not full duplex so you still need to connect the earphone part of the microphone to your soundcard. The Buddy USB 5G, a full duplex USB pod, does not require separate connection to your soundcard for the earphone. However, if you purchase it from us, please request in the special instructions, "Matt, please test this Buddy USB pod with a GN Netcom 405 UNC." This is because I don't recall us testing it with a new Buddy USB pod even though it should work.

I think the best answer would be to get a USB pod. That turns any microphone that could plug into the mic-in into a USB microphone. Something like the Andrea USB pod or another.

I use one here with an Andrea ANC-600 and a Sennheiser ME3 and it works great!

OK, sounds unanimous. Thanks for the explanation and suggestions. Martin, I will contact you.
