Using ViaVoice 10 at multiple sites

Hello. I'm wanting to use ViaVoice 10 on more than one PC. Today, we backed up a user on one PC, restored the user on to another PC, but when we tried to use it, it treated it as a new user. Is there a way we can transfer all of the user files between PCs? Do we need to intially create a user on each PC that we're using ViaVoice to update the profile using the restore function? Can anyone help?

Thank you so much in advance.

David

There is absolutely no

There is absolutely no reason why you cannot do what you want.

The simplest way is to do the following:-

With Windows Explorer or My Computer, copy your named user folder from your old PC using a CD or Memory Stick.

On your old PC, export your navigation and dictation macros to CD or Memory Stick.

Install ViaVoice in your new computer. Do not start up after installation. Reboot the computer.

Insert the CD or Memory Stick in the new computer. Copy the user folder and paste it in the ViaVoice \ Users folder.

(You do not say whether you have VV 10 or VV 10.5. In VV 10, the user folder will be in C: \ Program Files \ ViaVoice. In VV 10.5, it will be in C: \ Documents and Settings \ [named] User \ Application Data \ IBM \ ViaVoice \ Users.)

Then go to Start \ Settings \ Control Panel \ IBM ViaVoice Options. Click on the arrow at the right hand side of the top pane, and locate your name user and click Apply at the bottom of the window.

Click on the tabs to complete all the rest of the settings.

Open ViaVoice. You may find it will come up with popup windows telling you that speech recogniser cannot recognise the speech files, and other messages. Just simply click OK on each them until they all disappear. Then open ViaVoice again and it should come up with your user name.

Go to audio set up and set up your microphone in the usual way.

Import your dictation and navigation macros from CD or Memory Stick.

You should now be in business.

Thank you for responding.

Thank you for responding. I'm afraid it's a little more complicated than that.

Currently we're using ViaVoice 10 (not 10.5) on four PCs at four different sites, all with multiple users. The idea is that someone can create a profile on one PC and then hopefully transfer it to another. We're not really in a position where we can do clean installs each time.

Can I ask if you know what would happen if a user has a profile he has created on two different PCs and he backs up on one and then restores on the other?

Once again, thanks for your help.

I repeat what I said in my last post with modifications:

With Windows Explorer or My Computer on your transferor computer where you have the concerned, copy your named user folders (as many as you want) from your transferor PC using a CD or Memory Stick. (The user folder will be in C: \ Program Files \ ViaVoice. )

On your transferor PC, export your navigation and dictation macros to CD or Memory Stick.

Insert the CD or Memory Stick in the transferee computer. Copy the user folders and paste them in the ViaVoice \ Users folder. The existing folder in the transferee computer will be overwritten.

The user folder in the Transferee will be overwritten.

If you simply wish to transfer the new words from the transferor computer to the transferee computer
Edit your vocabulary manager in the transferor computer and get rid of the wrongly spelled or other undesirable words.

Close ViaVoice.

In My Computer, or Windows Explorer, locate *.ADD file in your User C: \ Program Files \ ViaVoice \Users \[your user name] \ *.ADD.

Open the *.ADD file using Word Pad or Notepad. (When you are doing this, make sure that you uncheck the box that says "always use the selected programme to open this kind of file".)

When you have opened this file, click Edit and then Select All, then copy. Close the *.ADD file.

Go to Microsoft Word, or other word-processing program, open a blank page and paste. Save this document with a name (such as "my words") in your CD or Memory Stick . (I suggest that you do this periodically, in order to update your new custom vocabulary.) Put your CD or Memory Stick in the transferee computer.

In the transferee computer, open ViaVoice and analyse "my words". ViaVoice will find any words it does not know and ask you to train them.

This can be done with any number of computers.

If you have a server, then "my words" could be put on to the server and analysed by any networked computers.
