ViaVoice-audio problems
HP Pavilion laptop, 2.8 GHz P4, 512 Mb Ram, Sound Max soundcard, WIN 2000, VV 10.5, standard headset with Andrea USB pod
Testing: WIN Sound Recorder: perfectly normal. Set to CD-quality 44,100 kHz.
Problem: the audio set up is normal right through to setting the volume, which came up as excellent. Proceeding to the first training speech "Speak normally in a relaxed tone of voice......" produces no reaction.
Installed backup user speech files. Reset the audio set up-excellent. Tried to dictate to Speakpad and Word. Microphone indicator blank – no sound getting through.
Uninstalled VV, ViaClean, reinstall – problem repeated.
Sounds and Multimedia: adjusted all the controls, adjusted the recorder volume to highest, checked and unchecked the gain control – no effect.
History of the computer: factory installed XP. Owner wanted to use WIN 2000. I created partitions, loaded WIN 2000 and made it a dual boot. I installed VV in WIN 2000 and trained the owner, and VV was working perfectly. Owner was using it. Some months later he had problems with the computer, and gave the computer to an "expert". After he got it back, VV refuse to work. Did a re-installation, with the above problems.
I subsequently discovered that the "expert" succeeded in wiping out WIN XP, and installed WIN 2000 on the C drive. Laptop now has 2 WIN 2000 - on the C and D drives. The computers operated through the original D drive WIN 2000.
My solution as to wipeout the C drive WIN 2000, replace it with the original XP from the factory disc, and this may resolve the problem.
Has anyone experience this problem? If so was there a solution?

Hi Quentin,
I'm having exactly the same problem. My old computer died a couple of weeks ago. It was running VV9 on Windows 2000 reasonably well, except for an annoying habit of randomly ignoring keystrokes when I was editing dictated text. My new machine has Intel Dual Core 2.4 and 2GB RAM. When I tried to install VV9 in Windows 2000, it recognised the microphone (Plantronics 100 USB) during audio setup, but when it came to the training step, it couldn't hear a thing, so installation didn't complete. When I checked the microphone using Windows Sound Recorder, it recorded OK (but there was some background noise, enough to upset the trace in the recorder window). I tried installing VV 9 again with my old Andrea headset through the soundcard, but hit the same problem. I have also tried installing VV 10.5, with the same result.
Has the past year brought any insights?
Regards
Clive
No one came up with any
No one came up with any solutions for the problem about which I wrote, but I resolved the problem ultimately by removing the redundant 2000 OS.
Did you try ticking the AGC (advance gain control) in the recording options in Audio Settings? He could also try unticking this in the playback settings if it is already ticked.
There could also be some programme in your computer which is creating a conflict. Have a look at
http://www.speechcomputing.com/node/1078 where the resolution of a programme conflict solved an installation problem.
I have had the same situation as you with VV which I resolved by replacing the user files with a backup set.
Another thing you could try is a complete uninstall, ViaClean, clearing all ViaVoice references in the Registry, disabling all anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall and see if this makes any difference. Again refer to a previous posting of mine advising the re-installation procedure. Have a look at http://www.speechcomputing.com/node/627 , http://www.speechcomputing.com/node/649 , where you will find links to other postings.
There was another similar case of a Dell desktop which caused by a hardware problem and was resolved after Dell fixed it. Again this is recorded somewhere in the ViaVoice section of this website, but I cannot remember its title.
It may well be that Martin might have some ideas.
There have been other instances of problems in built-in XP Home SP2, and uninstalling SP2 had no effect. My laptop XP Home was basic, and I added SP's1 and 2, and maintain the up-to-date updates.
In summary, I suspect that your problem is a programme conflict.

Another aspect to look at is
Another aspect to look at is whether or not there is in the XP conflict.
I use a floating Speechbar sized to my own specification, with the text says at System bold 14 font. On numerous occasions, with XP, when VV in my start-up folder, I get the fixed docked view with an enormous font. I close Speechbar and restart ViaVoice, and it comes up with my floating Speechbar. I have no such problems with Windows 2000.
On other occasions, I have heard the speech recogniser error message, and I have to replace the user folder with my backup. I have no such problems with Windows 2000.
My USB connections can be temperamental. More often than not, on start-up my laptop does not recognise the wireless mouse transmitter or the Speechmike connection. I have to remove and reinserted the connectors three of four times before the computer recognises them. I have the same connections on my desktop with Windows 2000 where I have no such problems.
XP seems to cause a lot of problems of one sort or another.
