DNS 8 won't save User Files and prohibits Win XP Home from closing.

For reasons unknown to me I am now getting the message below. Restarting my computer is invalidated. Any attempt brings up the below message and stops any attempt to restart or turn off computer. I have tried "repair" to no avail, and reinstalled only to have the message and all its complications recur. Installing the latest patch was useless.Do I have to figure out how to do a complete uninstall to get rid of the error before I reinstall again, and how can I save my vocabulary files? I really need help. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

The files "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ScanSoft\NaturallySpeaking\Users\Bob\current\aco.ini" could not be copied to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ScanSoft\NaturallySpeaking\Users\bob\tb\aco.ini". Try restarting your computer, or reinstalling NaturallySpeaking.

I believe, Bob, that all you need do is delete the tb directory (or perhaps its contents; I have an empty tb directory). I can't search to check that right now so you might want to copy the directory before trying that!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I had a similar problem.  I deleted the tb directory, as well is trying the reinstallation and rebooting solutions suggested in the error message.  None of these things solved the problem for me.

Good news/bad news: Pretty sure someone else reported this problem and got it fixed/I don't remember the solution. Sorry.

You can, of course shut down your computer. For example, pull the plug or, assuming its enabled in your Power Options, just hold the on/off switch until it goes off.

But you probably want a less drastic means. Assuming you can't kill NatSpeak, first try hitting Ctrl+Alt+Delete and select Task Manager | Processes. Highlight natspeak.exe and click End Process. Avert your eyes from the dire message of doom and click your assent.

See what happens once you reboot and restart NatSpeak. I would guess (and that's all it is, just a guess) that your user files may be corrupt.

Frankly, I would wait before doing anything serious. Maybe someone else know exactly what the problem is.

Thanks to you all for you rapid replies and effective answers to my dilemma. Judy, your proposal was elegant in its simplicity. I deleted the tb directory and voila... fait accompli! I had noticed that little devil when I compared the two references in the error message, but I was not cavalier enough to whack it. Clearly, with the staff of experts I have at my beck and call, I don't have to take incalculable risks:-) Thank you all again. I have left instructions with the bartender to give everybody in the house...

This happened to me as well, using Windows 2000 and Preferred 8.1.  Rebooting did not help and reinstallation failed because of product activation problems.  Since this happened on a weekend when I needed to keep working, and since I thought ScanSoft technical support was closed, I bought a copy of standard 8.0 and installed it.  The closing problem recurred, but as long as I kept the program open, I had a functional piece of software.  After repeated problems with product activation, I succeeded in getting information from ScanSoft technical support (which was running its e-mail operation on the Labor Day weekend-thank you, ScanSoft) and I got past product activation for standard.  Even then, though, the problem did not go away. The few times I needed to close the program, I used control alt delete, went to task manager, processes, and manually closed NatSpeak.exe.  I figured that by doing that I was losing whenever I had taught the program during the session, though I am not sure that was the result.  However, it did let me get rid of a program that would not otherwise close.

 

Just this morning, I created a new user (15 minutes), used Joel Gould's getwords and putwords programs to move my custom vocabulary with pronunciations, and I am back at work. 

 

On the gloomy side, I don't know whether the file closing problem is solved for good, since it would occasionally work in preferred.  Also on the gloomy side, I spend $100 to buy a new copy of the program because ScanSoft had advertised that its technical support crew went home on the weekends and because I needed to keep working.  On the good side, I have found that I don't miss a single feature unique to preferred.  I think I've just turned myself into a ScanSoft standard customer.  This will probably save money every time I upgrade.  Eventually, I may save back my hundred dollars.
