ViaVoice 10 Problems
I purchased and tried to install ViaVoice 10 Preferred. The installation process stalled at the point where it said "Importing Macros". I was not able to shut down the computer normally. I had to use the power switch. This procedure was repeated several times with the same results.
I have disabled McAfee firewall and antivirus as instructed. However, I am connected to the Internet via a wireless router which has its own firewall. I don't know if this is the problem or not.
Even though the installation process did not run through to completion, I have been able to open ViaVoice and complete the user set up. I am able to dictate into SpeakPad and to transfer text into other application's. Natural Language Commands work well in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. However, I am unable to dictate text into any application other than SpeakPad.
Any help will be appreciated.

Charles, What are your
Charles,
What are your computer specifications?
What speech recognition programs do you presently have in your computer, and did you have any previously?
Are you certain that you have correctly deactivated your firewall and anti-virus? Did you use msconfig to prevent them restarting? Did you reboot your computer after deactivating them before installing VV? Did you disable your wireless connection and made sure that it did not reconnect on re-booting?
I would suggest you do the following:-
1. Back-up your voice files using Windows Explorer, copy your user folder to elsewhere on your disk.
2. If you have any dictation or navigation macros, export them to somewhere safe on your disk where they can be easily found.
3. Uninstall ViaVoice using Control Panel \ Add Remove Programs.
4. Reboot.
5. On your installation disc, locate the support folder and run ViaClean, and let it also remove your voice files.
6. Within your firewall and anti-virus programmes, make sure they do not restart on booting up.
7. Run msconfig, and uncheck firewall and anti-virus programs. Also uncheck any programme which allows your wireless connection to start up automatically.
8. Reboot.
9. Reinstall ViaVoice. When it is finished installing, do not allow it to start up.
10. Copy your backup voice file folder and paste it into the ViaVoice user folder.
11. Go to Control Panel \ ViaVoice Options, and select your named user and apply. Then set all your personal preferences. Apply all these and then exit.
12. Start ViaVoice. You may get a number of pop-ups about the speech recogniser. Keep clicking on OK in each of these pop-ups, when they have all gone restart ViaVoice.
13. You should then adjust your audio settings and import your navigation and dictation macros that you had previously exported.
Hopefully after doing all this, you will be properly up and running.

Charles, I have just come
Charles,
I have just come across a blog that I recently wrote which possibly sets out more clearly the uninstallation and re-installation.
My suggestion is that you uninstall ViaVoice and reinstall it.
1. Using My Computer or Windows Explorer, go to C: \ ViaVoice \ Users \ [your user folder]. Copy your user folder to a safe place on your hard disc.
2. Open ViaVoice, go to Tools \ Work with Dictation Macros \ Edit \ Select All. Then click on File \ Export, and export your macros to a safe place on hard disk.
3. Go to the Navigation Macros \ File \ Export, and export your personally made macros to a safe place on hard disk.
4. Within your firewall and anti-virus programmes, make sure they do not restart on booting up.
5. 7. Run msconfig, and uncheck firewall and anti-virus programs. Also uncheck any programme which allows your wireless connection to start up automatically.
6. Close ViaVoice and reboot. Uninstall VV using Control Panel Add Remove Programs. Reboot.
7. Explore the ViaVoice installation CD, and you will see Support \ ViaClean. Hit ViaClean and let it clean out all ViaVoice and your user files.
8. Using a Registry cleaner such as RegScrubXP or Registry Mechanic, clean out all unwanted Registry entries. Reboot.
9. Do a clean installation of ViaVoice 10. Do not start up when installation is complete.
10. Go to your user backup folder saved on your hard disk. Copy it and paste it in C: \ ViaVoice \ Users.
11. Go to Control Panel \ IBM ViaVoice Options. Click on User, and select your user folder and apply.
12. Whilst you're in there, set up all your other preferences in Voice, Command Sets, Direct Dictation and etc. In Command Sets, make sure that Word Dictation and Word Natural Commands are checked. I do not check Active Programs since I found that on doing this, my computer slowed up. (This just may be my computer. ) I found that I do not need this facility.
13. Apply all changes and close.
14. Now open ViaVoice. You may get messages regarding the speech recogniser not recognising the language or some similar objection to opening. Just click OK on each of the pop-ups that appear. When these all disappear, and open ViaVoice. It will find your user with no problem.
15. Set up your audio at this stage.
16. Now you will want to import your macros. Simply reverse the exporting procedure.
17. Whilst you're in the navigation macros, delete any unwanted programmes that you do not use, and this will save resources. For example you will find Outlook Express 5 and 6. Delete the macros for the one you do not use.
You are now up and running again.
18. I have had to do this a few times when my XP SP 2 did funny things to ViaVoice after loading new programmes.
