Use the dictation scratchpad
Some programs might not automatically accept text dictation. You can use the dictation scratchpad to dictate text into these programs. When you use the dictation scratchpad, the text that you dictate appears in a separate window. The scratchpad works like a temporary document where you can use your voice, mouse, or keyboard. You can also use the scratchpad to make corrections using the Alternates panel or the Speech Dictionary. For more information about dictating text, see Dictate text using Speech Recognition.
1. Open the program that you want to dictate text into.
2. Open Speech Recognition by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking Ease of Access, and then clicking Windows Speech Recognition.
3. Say "start listening" or click the Microphone button to start the listening mode.
4. Say "show Speech Options," say "Options," and then say "Enable dictation scratchpad."
5. Dictate the text that you want. The scratchpad appears allowing you to see and correct the text that you want to dictate. When you're ready to insert the text into the program, say "insert."

So Many Steps
This sounds like a number of extra steps to simply integrate Select-&-Say dictation. It seems like this could have be done with a few less steps as in the case with NaturallySpeaking where this feature is built-in. In NaturallySpeaking you can dictate into almost any application by saying “show Dictation Box” and when you wish to close the Dictation Box and transfer your text you just say “Transfer”. We can't help thinking that a similar “fewer steps” function could be built into the dictation scratchpad. Just our $.02

You are an excellent source of technical information concerning Dragon NaturallySpeaking. However, it is apparent you have not used Windows Speech Recognition in a long time. Although not as simple as in Dragon where you say, Show Dictation Box, all you need say is:
"Show Speech Options," then "Options," and then "Enable dictation scratchpad," 4 extra words.
Dragon NaturallySpeaking with the dictation box feature costs anywhere from $150 for Preferred to around $1000 and up for Professional editions. Windows Speech Recognition is free. Having to say four extra words makes it a bargain.
At the Dragon VAR conference in Phoenix in June I gave separate presentations on microphones and then the next day on Windows Speech Recognition to the mostly Gold Certified Nuance partners. Had you been there you would have heard me explain my belief that for most professionals*, Dragon is a far more mature, easier to use and integrate product with high level of support if purchased from a skilled Dragon VAR.
* There are several dozen professionals I have dealt with that are happily using WSR to get their work (Medical, Legal, Writing etc.) accomplished. These users are for the most part technically advanced and willing to train themselves. There is also a $15.99 WSRToolkit which adds 7 features (training to macros to transcription from a digital recorder) expected in a Speech Recognition software.
