Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 - Preferred

Issues: Cannot successfully open, close, or save user files.

Part 1 – Initial DNS 10 Application set up. Pages 2-6

Part 2 – Opening/Configuring DNS 10. Pages 7-14

Part 3 – Critical DNS 10 Errors and Issues. Pages 15-23

My System Details: Dell Latitude D430 laptop, Windows XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 3, Intel Core 2 U7600 @ 1.20 GHz, 2 GB RAM. I loaded the software on another laptop (mirror image) and encountered the same issues.

System Software: McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention 6.1.0, McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise 8.5.0i, McAfee Data Loss Prevention (DLP) 2.2.22, Cisco Clean Access Agent 4.1.3.1, Office 2007, Adobe Acrobat Standard 9

Executive Summary: I am having very serious issues with DNS 10. Please review parts 1 and 2 to understand the installation circumstances, options, and configuration. Then read part 3 to understand all of the errors. My hunch is to blame DLP, but I am not sure. What do you think?

Bruce - I have created many users and each one has the same problem in that they are renamed.

Joey,

OK, is the first time you've used DNS? If not, are you upgrading a prior user or creating a new user?

Bottom of p16, why are you trying to Manage Users? Did you try going directly into dictating?

Bruce

Bruce, Great questions. I

Bruce,

Great questions. I am using managing users to show the problem that keeps happening. For example, if I select myself and hit properties, my user file renames itself.

I have used DNS in the past (9 and 9 w/ service pack). I uninstalled 9 and installed 10. I also loaded DNS 10 on another laptop (same specs) and experienced the same problems.

I can dictate sometimes, but saving my user file or exiting DNS causes problems such as "Joey_Dgnrenamed".

I have searched the internet high and low and have not found anything that relates to these issues. Weird!

Joey, Just for definiteness:

Joey,

Just for definiteness: Is this a brand new user and not one you've adapted from a previous installation?

Have you successfully run DNS on this machine before the McAfee DLP was installed?

For testing, can you just disable the McAfee thing without uninstalling it? Does the McAfee have an option to be tuned to "ignore" or otherwise accommodate a specific program? (Your IT people will probably come up with these possibilities, but you might mention them just for definiteness.)

BTW, as the DNS installation suggests, you machine sounds marginal at best for running DNS -- if its a company machine, it may be time to drop some broad hints Smiling

Bruce

PS: What happens if you try to dictate without Managing Users? Is dictation OK? Also, how is DNS installed -- as an administrator or guest account? Again, your IT people should be on top of this issue.

Joey,Congratulations! This

Joey,

Congratulations! This is best and most informative error report I have ever seen posted on a forum, and believe me, I've read some of them.

Just some points that might help you. Basically, the current profile you are working on, or trying to rather, somehow seems corrupted, and all your efforts to still open it must be useless, as matters stand. While you were trying to open it, it must have been in use still, either by another instance of Dragon, or raher due to Windows not having finished writing the data to the disk. Also, if you open the folders in Windows Explorer which contain the profile, or even just point the cursor on them, you'll be out of luck if you try to open the user in Dragon. The same is true if you try to look at the profile's properties in Dragon, while the profile is in use.

In short, some of the actions you performed on the profile, or even all of them, caused what's happening now, and you'll be good advised to call it a day for that profile. Anyway, you're not losing much, since you don't seem to have done much with it yet.

So, my best guess for you would be just delete all the folders which somehow relate to the profile(s) you've created or which have been created by Dragon during the process of renmaning, and start again from scratch.

Do the same as you did before, by choosing "No training", and follow all the steps you have reported. If the profile has been created successfully, close Dragon, and even close Windows, just to make sure that you are fine. Start Windows again, and then start Dragon after Windows has loaded completely.

If you are still experiencing the problems opening that profile, there might be more serious issues going on, which should be taken care of then.

As for the message that was telling you that command support for several applications has been disabled, this is due to your system specs being somewhat underpowered, by the way, but that shouldn't keep you from getting started anyhow.

Best
Rüdiger

First of all, thank you for

First of all, thank you for the compliment. It took me a while to create the PDF summary, but I am sure it will be helpful and answer many questions in advance.

I totally understand what you mean by causing problems by having Windows Explorer open. Trust me, it is not the problem. I can reboot, not open Explorer, and the same set of issues happen. I opened Explorer to screen-shot it as an example. Good guess though,,, I have experienced WINXP conflicts in the past that are as you described, but I am sure it isn't the cause in this case.

I have re-installed the program, rebooted many times, deleted user files, created new user files, used other mics, and all for nothing.

My best guess is McAfee DLP is causing the problem. My IT department is going to remove DLP from my laptop to see if it fixes these issues. If it does, then McAfee or Nuance will need to create a patch. If not, then we are at square one.

I thought it would be prudent to cast a wide net which is why I am sending out a request for help on this forum and on KnowBrainer. Maybe somebody has seen this before.

Joey, pointing your finger

Joey,

pointing your finger at McAfee seems a good idea, also. I guess I must have read people having issues along that line.

But still, basically your profile seems wasted. Have you tried creating a profile on some external disk, or even a thumb drive?

Rüdiger

Great idea

very interesting. I have a one TB external drive that I'll use. great idea.

admin's picture

My guess would be McAfee

I've lost all faith in anything to do with McAfee. I won't go into that here. (That saves us all a 3 day full-time rant)

After looking around your file, it's fairly obvious (even so stated) that another program has hold of your profile directory and files.

The only thing I see in your config that might cause that is the DLP program. This would seem to me a McAfee problem. Their program shouldn't take access away from programs accessing their data files such as Dragon is trying to do. It would seem they should allow you to "exempt" a part of the file system from their iron fist.

Keep us posted on what works with this!

Skip

DLP to blame

Skip,

I think you are right. DLP is probably the cause. My IT department is going to remove DLP for a few days to see if the DNS issues go away; I have a feeling that DLP is to blame.

Joey

I had a problem with Comodo

I had a problem with Comodo -- it liked to block DNS, but at least it was explicit about what it was doing. I thought it would be easier to move to another security suite than learn how to exempt specific programs, but then the next one (Spyware Doctor) took exception to DNS' Command Browser. I finally found one that seems to know more about which programs to exempt automatically: the newer, leaner Norton, but with all security suites the next nuisance just seems to be a matter of time... Smiling

Bruce

Confirmed: DLP is the culprit

To All:

DLP will cause critical DNS errors. My IT department removed DLP and DNS worked just fine.

JR

Joey, That's good hear, both

Joey,

That's good hear, both from your perspective and ours -- it is very thoughtful to post the solution to an open problem.

Bruce

happy to help

Bruce,

It is nice to finally know with certainty that DLP is causing my DNS issues.

We are going to document the problem and send a request to McAfee in the hopes they will create a patch.
