NaturallySpeaking in Windows 7 Trivia -- Talk Is Cheap In Terms of Resource Usage
An interesting utilities included with Windows 7 RC 7100 is something called "Resource Monitor". We used to go around looking for these sorts of things before from third-party suppliers, but now it's included in Windows 7. It monitors all sorts of things, many of which I scarcely understand, but CPU usage is fairly unambiguous.
I find on my system (64-bit Windows 7 with quad core Intel processor and 4 GB of memory running at 2.5 GHz) that no matter how fast I rap into the Dragon pad, I can't get CPU usage above 18 and a fraction percentage points even with the Speed/Accuracy meter pegged at 100% Accuracy bias! (Can you beat that? Now I know why we should mourn the loss of Billy May, the world's most obnoxious TV pitchman
)
When the meter is centered directly in the middle, the best I can do is six and a fraction percentage points. In both cases I'm just talking random gibberish off the top of my head to try and build up the translation backlog queue as deeply as possible. When I speak at my normal pace at the 100% accuracy setting, I can't even get the CPU usage up to 6%!
It seems to me that should give the programmers at Nuance plenty of overhead for improving the accuracy of their product.

You're going to hurt yourself with all that speed. Ship it westward so I can save you from it!
