ViaVoice and XP

Lately I have noted that various problems have arisen following recent XP updates. These include ViaVoice suddenly refusing to respond, SpeechMike suddenly refusing to respond, Firefox crashing, Microsoft Word crashing and other similar problems with other programmes.
Using an Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, XP SP 3, 4 Gb Ram (only 3 Gb recognised).
The only solution that I use is to log off and restart.
My main precaution against losing data in Word is to have it save to AutoRecovery every three minutes (one can set it shorter or longer), so that the amount of loss is minimal. The same applies in Excel.
I have to say that I never had these problems in Windows 2000
