Sony recorder bundled with DNS

Newbie here. Bought a Sony ICD-SX68DRG that came with DNS 9.5. So far so good. The recorder works great. DNS loaded without a problem and did training with voice and text files. Now WHAT? Since there is no DNS manual with the recorder and Nuance is no help, where should I start in learning how to use the software?

Also, should I upgrade to version 10? I'm a writer using a recorder for dictation of text, most as ideas rather than "finished" text. All I'm hoping for is for DNS to turn it into a preliminary draft file to be edited and expanded with MS Word.

At the moment, I'd just like to figure out how to use what I have, the 9.5 version. I can record just fine and I can open DNS just fine and have it transcribe the voice file to a text document; but I can't seem to find the area where you can edit questionable transcriptions.

Any help in pointing me to the right training on-line or in a book, whatever, would be GREATLY appreciated. In the meantime I'll rattle around within the software and see what I can find out.

THANKS!

We Recommend against Update Equipment

We hope you got a very good deal on that bundle because similar bundles with Ver. 10 have been out for nearly 6 months.

You may find some of the answers you are looking for on the dedicated NaturallySpeaking Transcription Recorder Forum but if you want something quick, down and dirty, just make your recordings on your digital recorder, USB download those files to the bundled Sony software and drag those files to DNS DragonPad for instant transcription.

Although the Sony ICD-SX68DRG recorder is on the Nuance recommendation list, we think it falls short of the mark for serious transcription work and if transcribing digital recordings is important to your workflow we recommend avoiding out of date DNS software  and consumer grade digital recorders. Our Digital Recorder Guide may be of additional assistance to you.

Well that is VERY grim news! No, can't say I got a deal but then I have nothing to compare it to. $160 on Amazon.

I fumbled my way through a few transcriptions and was pretty amazed at the results. There were only a very few errors and they were due to slurring a few words. My fault, not the Dragon's fault.

I don't plan on using the software to control a computer with speech or to dictate directly into the computer, so I don't know if I need a higher version, unless there are distinct advantages in voice recognition. Is that the case?

I won't be doing any heavy-duty dictation. It would be more like recording the beginning ideas of articles, blogs, letters, etc, and then being able to transcribe it fairly easily. Probably in 30 minute to 1 hour segments. So far it appears this may work as soon as I learn the basic commands for formatting and punctuation.

So I guess my main question is should I upgrade to 10 with these rather loose requirements?

Thank you very much for your reply. Already I've found DNS and the Sony recorder to be very useful. I'll follow up as well on the "Transcription Recorder Forum" that you suggested.

My thoughts would be not to upgrade yet. Yes, version 10 has increased accuracy but it really doesn't sound like you need that yet. I would focus on learning to use it and once that is done I might consider upgrading if you feel it's needed. It really sounds as if the most important part of the entire operation for you is the digital recorder and DNS is merely the tool keeping you from typing a lot.

Yes, I think you are right.  Thanks for confirming that and answering so quickly.  I love this forum by the way.  It's a great help.
