DNS 10 Vista 64bit FREE Update Promised

I was told today that DNS 10 will have a free update for Windows Vista 64-bit edition by the beginning of next year '09 for anyone owning current versions of DNS 10. I just wanted to post this as a marker and promise that I was told this by customer support at Nuance today. This will not be an upgrade that will cost more money. It will be a FREE update.

I hope if anyone learns differently they will post what that difference is here in this thread. If there is not a free update I intend to return my DNS for a refund, because I bought it wanting to install it on Vista 64. I will note that most 32-bit Vista software will work on Vista-64, even though it is unsupported, so I was expecting the same with DNS 10. It would work but not be supported. This is not the case with DNS 10.

Also, I find it a bit strange that the Nuance website for posting in its Forum has not been accepting new posts since August 8??? I tried posting this information, but the forum would not allow a log-in to post.

Check it out...

There must be lots of problems with the software to shut down the Forum this way???

I doubt that's because of DNS 10.

It appears to let you log in, and brings up a screen to post, but the post is never shown. The latest date showing for a post was 8/9/2008 if you sort by dates.

I wonder if it's all their forums or just the one? Seems someone told me their forums run on Lotus Notes. Wonder what happened to it/them?

Hmmm....

Oh... on the upgrade, that reminds me of Wimpy in the Popeye comic strips: "I'll gladly pay you on Tuesday for a hamburger today."

I thought there were various

I thought there were various 'communities' on the support site. Apparently it's just for DNS!

Oh well...

DNS public forum not working

The reason the DNS public forum is not working is because they are trying to resolve some issues that are completely unrelated to DNS 10.

These are internal issues and there is no projected date as to when this forum will be restored to active status. However, it has nothing to do with DNS 10.

This is good news to hear from someone other than myself. I was told the same thing. However, I was asked not to say anything until it was announced by Nuance in one form or another. I would expect that it will be offered in the same manner that DNS 9.5 was offered for Vista users (i.e., as a download to registered users with a valid serial number).

The release date is about what I would have expected.

DNS 10 64 bit

I really do hope that this is correct. It is amazing to me that they have not produced a 64 bit compatible version already. There seems to be no mention of this on their site so that I expect that many people buy the software and then find that it doesn't work. A nice little earner for Nuance.
I've had dealings with Nuance on the phone in the past. I'm sorry to say that they seem to be a complete mess. I'm sure that they could make so many more sales if they overhauled their marketing and cusomer relations function.

I remember maybe about 8 years ago or more speaking with one of the original developer/owner of Dragon Dictate on the phone. What colossal enthusiasm and how accessible and how helpful.
All gone now.

Hold on to that experience -- its a rarity. As innovative products become successful, access to the developers becomes impossible. How much time could the Bakers have personally devoted to customer relations and still have kept a close eye on things?

That access may be gone, but I don't know about the enthusiasm -- how can anyone know without access? I would argue that neither access nor enthusiasm are strictly necessary -- the most important factors are professionalism and competence. Those are the two things I've begun to worry about. Of course, to some extent access is a key component of professionalism and competence, and at least since the Bakers frivoled away their primacy (a sign a lack of professionalism and competence?), DNS/ScanSoft/Nuance has manifested a militantly unilateral stance vis-a-vis the user community -- they read the signs as they choose, but know one is allowed to know anything about the details. When they guess right, things go well...and of course the opposite follows from the opposite.

Contrast M$, which early on defined its primary user community as corporations and professional groups -- its relationship with IBM probably played a major role in forming that outlook. It developed and mined those relationships more than any other software company in history, and its current status suggests the success of that policy.

Of course, mere users don't play much of a role in either company's culture, but at least M$ has a formal culture to get input from a critical audience. We don't really know to whom Dragon/Nuance feels accountable -- Warburg/Pincus?

Bruce, Having met some of

Bruce,
Having met some of those involved with the current development of Dragon I can assure you that they are both highly enthusiastic and highly professional and competent.

I would disagree with your statement that enthusiasm is not necessary. In my experience of research and development it is when enthusiasm wanes that real innovation stops.

Graham

PS Is "frivoled" a word in the DNS US Vocabulary? Smiling

Graham, Good to hear from

Graham,

Good to hear from you in this venue!

I suppose my point was that while enthusiam may be necessary, its not sufficient to produce good results. My experience is that the pain of being unable to live with some puzzle or problem is the main motivation for a researcher. Plus, maybe, the pain of not letting a competitor claim the glory.

I think of enthusiasm as being like happiness, viz., a transient psychological state. Being enthusiastic, like being happy, is often a public mask. Someone asks you "How are you doing?", and you say "OK" even if your two-year old is going through treatment for brain cancer unless its a very close friend or a relative.

Lots of people are not permanently either happy or enthusiastic, but they do what they have to do nevertheless, be it work, parenting, caring for someone who is ill, etc. Indeed, a big part of commitment is the resolve to soldier on long past the time when its "fun". I could but won't invoke examples involving sex here, partly to maintain my public stoic mask Smiling

"frivoled" is of course a part of my Dragon vocabulary Smiling

Bruce

PS: Now that I've had my "bah humbug" moment, its good to hear they're enthusiastic and, hopefully, will remain so for many years to come.

Any update on the DNS 10 for Vista 64??

Meaning, I suppose, any announcements of further delays?
