Dvorak displays his customary acerbity re: "What's the Value of Online Comments?":

Basically he's concerned about how discussions get hijacked by ideology (i.e., politics or religion), spite, trivia, egotism, etc. Its more of a statement of the problem than a proposal for solving it.
I would add that some of the forums I visit also get side-tracked by purely commercial interests, like a vendor pushing a product or a manufacturer (e.g., of software or any kind of expensive technical gear) promoting its line of wares. In the latter case, the prurient appeal to rampant consumerism is blatant and repulsive, but many people seem to love partaking of the pandering!

PS: On the second page he lists seven "Thou Shouldn't"'s. I figure I've violated at least five, several this very week here and elsewhere. I'm just gonna have to buckle down and work on the other two -- there should be some sort of Adult Scout Merit Badge for these kinds of things

Bruce, I had the opportunity
Bruce,
I had the opportunity a number of years ago of taking John Dvorak out to dinner as requested by my employer at the time.
While John tends to be an arrogant son of a bitch, he's quite bright and makes some very good points at times. To a certain extent, I would compare him to Joe Gould, whom I worked with for the few months that he was still the senior engineer at Lernout & Hauspie for DNS.
However, thank you for pointing us all to that article. He makes some very good points. I think that we're all guilty at times as regards his "don'ts". Even this post breaks one of his basic rules.
