C++ runtime has requested this program to terminate in an unusual way -- with Dragon 9.1
Greetings fellow Dragon users,
For the past two days, I have been frequently getting a message that the C++ runtime has requested this program to terminate in an unusual way, and NatSpeak shuts down. I've googled and found some people solving this by uninstalling the Google toolbar, but I don't have that. I defragmented, rebooted, set several nonessential programs not to autostart, and rebooted, but it happened again. Specs: Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.1, Windows XP SP2, Microsoft Office 2003, 10-month-old custom-made dual-CPU Pentium, Asus P5K motherboard with 2 GB RAM, use Firefox for Web. I haven't installed any new programs since at least two weeks ago (and even that wasn't really new as I used to use it on previous machine), and wasn't running or doing anything unusual AFAIK when this started happening. This shutdown does not leave any event notices in the Event Viewer. What should I try next?

Do the free upgrade to version 9.5. If the problem persists, its a stubborn one
Bruce
PS: It could be a corrupted user file. You could try creating a new user to see if it helps. But the 9.5 upgrade is also something you should do.
C++ runtime continued
Thanks, Bruce and Lunis -- I didn't get the email notification of your posts so I didn't know anyone had answered until I checked just now. I'm going to check with my Dragon dealer first because I've been watching the dragon.log file, and eliminated some possibilities based on that (changed to standard mouse driver as there was something about mouse hooks and I had installed an Intellimouse driver not too long ago). But the one thing that remains constant in the log file is something about a memory leak and not enough room for something about vocabulary. So I'll see what he thinks about that before upgrading (he had previously said not to upgrade if I didn't have Vista).

Margaret,
I think he's wrong: I wouldn't touch Vista with a longish implement, but DNS 9.5 works nicely with XP SP3.
Bruce
seems to have been a corrupted vocabulary file
I sent my dragon.log to my dealer, who said that it indicated a corrected vocabulary file. At that point, this error was occurring whenever I tried to start a program, so I could not get in to do anything. So my dealer suggested that I delete my user files directory, which would force Dragon to start a new user when it opened up. So far this seems to have solved the problem, and I imported my macros from a backup copy of the old user.
DNS 9.5 Update Guide
Just adding to Bruce's
excellent advice... we also recommend upgrading to Ver. 9.5 and our DNS 9.5 Update
Guide includes a step-by-step on the process but considering your C++
runtime error it might be better if you uninstall NaturallySpeaking and then
run DNS9.5
Remover which removes all traces of NaturallySpeaking that the uninstall
program leaves behind. Keep in mind that Remover literally removes every
piece of NaturallySpeaking so you will want to safeguard your user files by
moving them to a temporary location such as your desktop. The reason why we
recommend uninstalling 1st is so that you'll not lose an activation.
