Audio driver problem when installing VV10 on XP Pro SP2

I've used ViaVoice for many years. I've just upgraded my laptop to an IBM Thinkpad T61 and was reinstalling VV10 on the new platform. Once I start the VV User Wizard, I hit enter a couple of times to get to the "setting up your audio components" dialog which, before I can even enter anything, displays an "Audio Setup Wizard" error window that says
"Problem: A problem occurred while trying to use your audio mixer for recording." and
"Solution: Try restarting your system. If the problem still happens, there may be a problem with your audio device driver."

The listed solution (restarting) does not work. As I use the tool regularly, I will miss it tremendously if I cannot reinstall it. I especially need it now, as I just had surgery that will allow me to type with only one hand for a while - dreadfully inefficient.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds like an XP

That sounds like an XP problem.

What type of microphone are you using ie. is it directly into the microphone jack or is it USB?

Have you checked your Audio settings in Control Panel \ Sounds and Multimedia? You should check to see what the input device is.

Have you checked out your microphone in sound recorder to see is it recording? If it is not, then your problem is either XP or the computer.

There have been various threads on this site which deal with microphone and soundcard problems, and how to check and fix them. If you do a search for microphone, the various threads should come up. Also have a look at http://www.speechcomputing.com/node/627 .

I have an Acer Travelmate with the same specifications as yours, but now with XP SP3, and have had no trouble with the Phillips Speechmike. But an external mike plugged in to the microphone jack using the internal soundcard was hopeless, resulted in loud buzzing sounds coming through. I was connected to the mains, and I have intended to try it with the battery only (but have not yet got round to doing this), as there have been reports on this site of similar difficulties when using the mains supply rather than the battery.

I had the same error message

I had the same error message with VV on my Thinkpad T61, same specs as yours. I use an Andrea USB sound pod. I went into Sounds and Audio Device Properties and set the Andrea as the default recording device on the Audio and Voice tabs. Did the trick.
