Computer viruses or trojans

In the last few days, everything seemed to be slowing up on my laptop, ViaVoice was progressing very slowly, and I was having terrible trouble with my USB SpeechMike which kept cutting on-and-off without warning, and sometimes I had to do a restart to get things moving again.
Rather than doing a major search with Anti-Virus, which would take over an hour, I simply formatted my C drive, put back last month's image, reinstalled all the new programmes I had put in, and updated Windows Defender.
Total time: half-an-hour.
Result: everything back to normal.
