Toshiba screen of death

Turns out the entire Toshisiba A215 line has the "blank screen" defect I was describing in my recent post. (My U205 still wheezes along, loud fan, without a hitch. But it's making me blind!)

I found dozens of enraged A215 customer posts online at various consumer and tech sites. Some people claim to have fixed "the screen of death" by downloading new BIOS from the Toshiba site, others by setting their minimum processor speed to 100%. (Still others claim this last fix burns out the computer prematurely).

None of the suggested fixes worked for me. At least once every few hours the computer would spontaneously go into a hibernation (coma, I call it) from which it could not be awoken. Might happen during document creation, in which case all data was lost. Might happen when DNS wasn't even on and I was just watching a DVD.

No wonder these machines are priced to move! The aptly-named Best Buy "geek squad" insists they find no problem with the machine when they inspect it, and have never heard another customer complaint. Hmmmm. I returned the computer and got my money back.

So the search goes on for a 14/15 inch-screen laptop with 2GB RAM 2 MHz speed, suitable for a quad who uses DNS all the time for every function. I'm still partial to Lenovo. Any other allegiances?

FWIW, they seem to think Lenovo is pretty good, but they also like Acer. Of course, they also like Toshiba Smiling

Wow. It would seem they would be 'on top' of getting that fixed if it's that widespread a problem.

Glad to hear you managed to get a refund!
