DNS 9 causes Adobe reader 8.1 to crash on Exit
Submitted by vroberts on Thu, 03/13/2008 - 02:14.
I installed Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 on my XP system last Saturday. So far, it seems to be working. Today I realized that if I open a PDF file, Adobe Reader 8.1 will fail on File/Exit when DNS is loaded. Is this a known problem? is there any way to avoid this?

Check for Updates
We do not have Acrobat Reader 8.1 because we use Acrobat
Professional 8.1.2 and DNS Pro 9.5 which seems to get along fine. However, we
remember an earlier conflict between NaturallySpeaking and Adobe Acrobat. If
you so much as tried to resize a window, Acrobat would crash. We recommend
checking for the latest Adobe Acrobat updates and making sure that you are
using DNS 9.5 rather than 9.0 or 9.1.

I actually have DNS Preferred 9.10.000.141 SP1, and Adobe Reader 8.1.2. And, I just discovered that Reader also crashes when I try to resize the window, as you mention, but only when I'm viewing a document. If Reader is open without a document I can resize and even close Reader without any problems - but that's not a very useful mode

9.5 Update Guide includes a step-by-step on obtaining and installing the
free 9.5 upgrade and we're sorry about your problems in Adobe Acrobat. About
all that we can tell you is that we believe the instability problem was
supposed to be fixed with the release of Ver. 8 but Acobat may behave better in
Windows Vista then Windows XP.
I'm confused. I don't think
I'm confused. I don't think I need or should use the DBS 9.5 upgrade because I already have DNS 9.10. Is this correct?

The Dragon 9.5 update is a cumulative update that includes the corrections made in 9.1. Although the update says it is for Vista, it is also for Windows XP. CLICK HERE for the Dragon 9.5 Preferred download link. You will also have to download the Dragon 9 Remover tool to remove version 9.1. CLICK HERE for the link to the remover tool. Once 9.1 is removed, you will be able to install 9.5. You will need your installation key to download 9.5.
Also, backup your user files before removing 9.1.
