How can I stop !%@%! Dragon NaturallySpeaking from adding "e-mail" back to my vocabulary?
Submitted by mdl on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 19:24.
Email is spelled without a -, damn it!
I already have a vocabulary word, "email" with spoken form "e-mail" in an attempt to stop this.
I'm using DNS 8.1 professional.

For e-mail, check 'always
For e-mail, check 'always use alternate written form' and give email as the alternate written form

Thank you! That appears to have solved the problem.
Upgrade to Pro 9.5
There's a good chance that Judy's recommendation will work but
if it doesn't, try the following:
1.
Remove “email” from your vocabulary
2.
Add “e-mail” to your vocabulary
3.
Select “e-mail” and click the Properties
button
4.
Put a check mark in “Use alternate Written
Form”
5.
Type “email” in the field to the right and
click the OK button.
Because you are using Ver. 8, you will not be able to prevent
the more general accepted form of “e-mail” from reappearing in your
vocabulary at a later date but if you upgrade to NaturallySpeaking
Pro 9.5 you'll find a new option that will prevent NaturallySpeaking from
automatically adding words to your vocabulary. Even though Ver. 9 features a
15% boost in the out-of-the-box accuracy, we consider the ability to stop
NaturallySpeaking from adding unwanted dictation to be even more important
and if you don't agree, try opening your vocabulary and examining the
thousands of unwanted partially spelled words that you have already acquired.
When it comes to NaturallySpeaking, if you want to get the most out of your
software, you really have to go with the latest version.

Both Judy and KnowBrainer have good recommendations. However, if you look up "e-mail" in any dictionary you will find that it is spelled with a-. That is the correct spelling. "email" is accepted as OK (common usage), but it is not the correct spelling.
From WordWeb (Princeton University computer dictionary):
Verb: e-mail
1. Communicate electronically on the computer
Noun: e-mail
1. (computer science) a system of world-wide electronic communication in which a computer user can compose a message at one terminal that can be regenerated at the recipient's terminal when the recipient logs in

If you check Google, you'll see there's a lot of controversy on this issue. Knuth put it well in 1999:
We have been using email in the computer science community for decades; it long ago ceased to be a new word.

Who cares? When I wrote my doctoral dissertation every instance of email was circled and replaced with e-mail. The argument is moot and Google is not the be-all and end-all.

Note that Google isn't being invoked as an authority here; rather its Knuth, whose authority is apodeictic in programming! Google is just the messenger.
Ironically the argument seems old-fashioned if not prissy since it predates the use of SR -- these days technorati calibrate writing exertion in syllabic utterances rather than keystrokes!
Apparently it depends on the
Apparently it depends on the community. I've been paying attention the last two days and not counting this site I've seen exactly 1 e-mail out of about 50 occurrences. In the computer science community, using "e-mail" makes you stand out as behind the times.

PS, I just checked my saved pile of email's from my Ph.D. advisor and sadly the word email doesn't come up all that often so I don't know for sure which he prefers, but I'd be surprised if he didn't use email.

Personally, I have always used e-mail and must therefore resign myself to being behind the times. After the discussion began, I did consult the OED and to my surprise it has the headword "email" (although there are several examples with a hyphen), that said there are plenty of other examples where it has words with a hyphen that, at least nowadays, tend to be written without one.
In any event, I should check the entries in your own Dragon vocabulary, I should be surprised if your Ph.D. advisor uses "email's" as the plural.

That rationale hardly matters to an SR user! So presumably in our cases it comes down to a matter of personal judgment. I think the soft-ware should be malleable to your preferences, so hopefully the suggestions made will work!
Excuse me while I tend to the remainder of my e-mail.

I prefer "software" to "soft-ware", BTW.

Hello list,
Apart from the linguistic discussion, Judy's solution was correct and complete. Works in version 8 already. I do not understand why KnowBrainer had to add coments to that remark.
It seems KnowBrainer, also with the large logo header, wants to promote itself on this - not commercial - forum.
Therefore I would like to ask KnowBrainer to make your "header" more modest and react only if it is relevant for the discussion,

Hear hear.
In addition, KnowBrainer's logo makes it very difficult, and time wasting, to quote his contributions for replies. Possibly that is why he puts in his logo – to put us off bothering to reply.

Logo Size?
I now see that my answer basically echoed Judy’s although I did not realize it at the time. Please pardon my mistake. I've answered over 20,000 NaturallySpeaking related questions on various forums and I occasionally error. I'm only human.
However, you are the 1st person I can recall complaining about the size of the KnowBrainer logo, which I have no control over on this forum. I further note that my logo is no larger than anyone else's logo or picture. In this thread alone, Chuck's picture is as large as my logo so I don't really understand why you are making an example of me when there appears to be a few hundred other contributors with logos or pictures that are all approximately the same size as the KnowBrainer logo.

Mea culpa
I have only just discovered that Skip must have made an improvement on the site whereby when one quotes, the programming language relating to a logo does not appear as part of the quote.
The last time that I quoted KnowBrainer, I had to abstract the quotation from the logo language (whatever you call it), and it was a pain

Still... the picture is meant to be a personal picture, not a company logo. Maybe also the 4 line trailer of Lunis is a bit heavy for this forum.
With all respect to Lunis/KnowBrainers contributions (I hope you will continue of course), this is a forum for people, not companies. If people from companies contribute, make the advertisements as lean as possible. Thanks.

KnowBrainer Business Model
I see your point about my tag and icon but this is my business
model and I could not possibly subject forum members to my ugly mug which in
the US would be construed as cruel and unusual punishment.
I realize that Technical Support Forum's are designed for
end-users to support one another but when support forums ban vendors, you'll
minimally lose 50% of the overall support on most forums. You might think of
it as unobtrusive television advertising. My Tech Support is always free but I
typically pepper my answers with embedded hyperlinks as advertising. It's
kind of like watching someone drinking a can of Coke on an episode of CSI and
when I deliver a requested answer, the person whose question I answer never
complains about my embedded hyperlinks, icon or tag line. One example of an
embedded hyperlink would be: microphones.
If I use this hyperlink in an explanation it doesn't detract from the
explanation or take additional time to read but it does offer the end user
the option of clicking the link if they require additional microphone
information or just want to compare the current system with the latest gear. This
is much better than forcing people to wade through a link like microphones = https://www.knowbrainer.com/storefront/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=18.
Bottom line: You probably don't need any of my NaturallySpeaking
answers but you certainly don't have to read my tag line. When the people
whose questions I am answering start to complain about this, I will change
it.

Just so. However I have not quoted KnowBrainer for quite a while.
