HEADPHONE ISSUE - A BIT DIFFERENT AND OUT OF THE ORDINARY
I have a little problem.
I'm about to take a special assessment with a captioning company for voice captioning. The day of the test I will be directed to a website where the audio file will be there for me to caption. The problem is, is that the computer that Via Voice is on does not have the internet and cannot because it is the computer where I work - we are not allowed to have that computer hooked to the internet ever since it's connected to sensitive parts of our system. There is no way. The problem I'm trying to work out is my microphone/headset is hooked to the computer that doesn't have internet and cannot attain access to the net. So, that means I'd have to get the sound file (only played realtime once, on my laptop, but the sound would be coming from my laptop and the headset/mic hooked to the computer with via voice would be doing the voice captioning. All I'm doing is a realtime file in speakpad and then sending them an ASCII file right away when I'm finished for them to grade. Is there some sort of device that I can somehow hook the sound from my laptop to the headset/mic that I'm wearing for the pc that has viavoice? The only other thing I could do is to buy viavoice and install it on my laptop and do the entire test from there, but I don't feel my laptop is up for the challenge. It's not fast enough for the kind of speed I'll need to keep up with the testing. What can I do. I can't wear two headsets - that's crazy. Everything in this will be to be able to hear distincely the audio file so that I can caption this program. Is there anything i can do?
Thanks,

Sure
1.You can temporarily disconnect your headset, and plug-in a double ended male 3.5 mm audio cable between the laptop and your workstation.no Internet connection would exist between the laptop and a workstation, and you could process incoming audio directly from your laptop.
2. Depending on how many incoming channels your workstation soundcard has, you might be able to use an extra channel to receive the incoming audio, either from a file or sound feed on the laptop.
3.You can install a second soundcard, if having your headset plugged in is important.
further explanation on headset dilemma
Hi,
thanks for responding. On the main desktop computer, I need full full sound and hearing capabilities - nothing interrupted because I have to "hear" and "speak" during the realtime test session, which I need coming from my laptop. Can you expound upon how I would set this up and also where I could get the doubleended male 3.5 mm audio cable between the laptop and my workstation? There are things I would be unable to do - because it is at my first job - I only am trying to find a way to connect sound in through my current headset from the other computer. Do you know what that would cost and would I have full sounding audio, as well. I'd need to do a test run before the test. The test is a one-shot deal - meaning I cannot access the audio after one time. Can you help further? Thanks for the response so quick. Can you be specific on where to plug in where? Where the headphones will go. I have a "non-usb" headset - usb's and not used with my viavoice and won't work correctly for what I'm doing.

After reading all this, I think the simplest way to go would be a small earphone from the laptop (plugged in as a speaker perhaps) that will be hooked to the Internet. Something like an earbud would fit underneath even a full headset without a lot of discomfort.
Check places such as Walmart/Target/Kmart/BestBuy (or other big store) electronics section or a Radio Shack if one is near you.
There are other ways, but this is by far the least complicated.
