Are there updates for VVoice?
Submitted by dove lover on Tue, 12/11/2007 - 19:18.
Hello,
I work for a tv station - I'm the one with all the questions....anyway I am voice captioning our programs with VV and cpc software. We are using VV 10.0. We did have 10.5, however, we had that double numbers problem and thought that would cure it - for some reason they thought it was that and probably had enough good reason to think it had something to do with it. So, with that said - I wanted to know if there are any updates to viavoice? If so, are they free and where would I find them free or for charge? I appreciate your help in advance.

10.5 was the last edition.

Just adding to Quentin’s excellent
advice... Nuance has no plans to release a newer version of ViaVoice or issue
a patch. ViaVoice is also slated to be
discontinued sometime in 2008 as development ended several years ago. Nuance owns Dragon NaturallySpeaking
outright and owns all profit rights to ViaVoice but it probably doesn't make
much sense to support more than one speech recognition product.

it's already dead. Has been for several years. 10.5 was the last version release, and aside for support on the Nuance website for 10.5, there will be no new updates or versions ever again.

ViaVoice is no longer being developed, but Version 10.5 (updated in July 2004) is still available, and is still an excellent programme that works perfectly up to Win XP, and up to Word 2003. Therefore if you are still using XP and up to Office 2003, VV is an alternative to DNS.
All of the pundits on this site say VV will not work in Windows Vista. I have never tried it, and therefore I have to take their word for it.
If you are using VV and wish to switch to DNS, but preserve the custom dictionary you have built up, there is no difficulty since the non-contextual words from the VV custom dictionary can be analysed by DNS.

From what it says on the Nuance website, I'd say it's pretty well dead as there will be no version for the Vista O/S at all.

Yes they are! So get it while it's there I'd say!
Hello Dove Lover
Unfortunately for the SR world, IBM dropped ViaVoice a while ago (see other posts).
As to your double number problem, in my mind that would seem to come as a result of the captioning software. A good test would be to see if ViaVoice does the same thing all by itself.
Version 10.5 was the last update that I'm aware of for ViaVoice. Nuance has stated there will not be a Vista compatible version as well. Nuance's ViaVoice pages are at http://www.nuance.com/viavoice/ the Vista page is at http://www.nuance.com/vista/naturallyspeaking/upgr... .
The ViaVoice support center is at http://www.nuance.com/viavoice/support/ .
Hope something in there helps your figure out what the problem is.
Thanks everyone for the responses....
Hello everyone and those that responded, specifically. Thanks for your input and I will pass this along to my supervisor. I wish there was further support for ViaVoice. I think with work it could be a whole lot better. I believe the double number problem to be with the captioning software because as stated by a person that replied - I did try it in speakpad and it doesn't seem to do it within ViaVoice. If I cannot figure it out - I plan on working around it by tricking it somehow as certain numbers don't double up - it seems only when mentioning a number by itself - that it does this. I mentioned dollar amounts and it didn't do it. I also have been trying to figure out how to make my macros in Viavoice show up in upper and lower case for only the speaker identifications in my captioning software, however, it seems that it won't work due to the fact that I have the case set to "convert to all caps" in the captioning software. I think it would be easier (and seems to be standard on news stations) for the identifications to be in upper and lower case and the dialogue beyond the titles to be in all caps. Just don't know a way around this. I thought somehow there could be code I could type in for these needs, but it doesn't seem to be possible thus far. I cannot imagine how I could not have every option in captioning that I need, but I don't seem to. Also, for certain things I need certain things italicized but even if I do it in ViaVoice - in the captioning software it will not do it. Wish I had a way around these issues. At any rate - I thank you for the information and please have a wonderful Christmas if I don't post before then.
Blessings,

I'm not super familiar with captioning software so keep that in mind.
It really sounds like your captioning software is a major problem. Perhaps you should consider another captioning software?
Good luck!
