help! DNS 9: TTS closes software
Submitted by erik on Sat, 11/10/2007 - 23:04.
Help! I tried using the TTS feature of my DNS medical V9 (and I'm current on all updates from Nuance) - when I changed from the set voice to another voice I got an error that said something needed to be unlocked. Now whenever I try to change back to the original voice either manually or by the command restore original settings, the whole program shuts down once I click OK or APPLY. When I restart the software, I'm back where I started - no changes have been made and I can't use the TTS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You have not provided sufficient information with which to assist you. What you have given us is tantamount to calling up your mechanic in saying that your car won't start but not telling him/her why.
What version of DNS 9 Medical are you using (9.0/9.1/9.5)?
What is your hardware configuration (i.e., CPU, speed, RAM, etc.)?
Provide us with a step-by-step explanation of exactly what you did (i.e., what voice did you change to).
It sounds as though your installation of DNS is corrupted, specifically with reference to the TTS portion which is installed separately and in a different location than the DNS program files. Nevertheless, the above information is critically important in order to tell you specifically what it is that you ought to do to fix the problem. We could give you the general wrecking ball approach, which would solve the problem. However, it may not be necessary to go to extremes and I'm sure that you would prefer to avoid this if possible.

Per Chuck’s advice, the first thing you
should do is look under the NaturallySpeaking help menu to see what version of
NaturallySpeaking you are using. If
you're using 9.0 or 9.1 you should skip the next paragraph and download/
install Ver. 9.5 which is freely available to you. Our DNS 9.5 Update
Guide includes a pictorial step-by-step on the process. If you're already using Ver. 9.5, read the
following paragraph.
Although we concur with Chuck, we suspect
that a simple Repair of NaturallySpeaking will take care of the problem. To perform a Repair of NaturallySpeaking double-click
the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. Browse to Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 and
click the Change button. You
can follow the prompts for performing a Repair.

In addition, because of the fact that your TTS is having a problem, you might want to do the following in addition to the suggestions made by KnowBrainer:
1. Locate the folder lhsp, which can be found in the following location:
C:\Program Files\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking9\Program\lhsp
2. Before running a repair of DNS, delete this folder. This is the folder that contains all of the DNS TTS information. By deleting this folder first, you get rid of any problems that may exist with any of the files contained therein. Windows has a funny way of not overwriting files if it doesn't find any specific problems with such. However, running a repair of DNS generally overwrites all files except those found in the C:\Windows\speech folder. However, the files in that folder are not at issue, and you should leave them alone anyway. Nevertheless, deleting the folder lhsp will ensure that no corrupted files are left behind.
