Why does MS Word 2007 freeze up when I start DNS?

I purchased MS Word 2007 for my new Toshiba (which came with no word processing program). As long as I have it, I installed it on my old IBM ThinkPad T40. Didn't realize it would automatically convert all my existing documents, years and years of them, to the new Windows format -- which I hate: too many toolbar gizmos, ugly graphics.

I can't use mouse pad or keyboard; my hands are paralyzed. That's why I started voice-recognition in the first place. And up until now, few problems. But Word 2007 documents freeze when I try to use DNS 9. No problems with DragonPad or any other applications, including web browsers.

Can someone tell me why?

Are you using DNS 9.5? Word

Are you using DNS 9.5? Word 2007 is not compatible with DNS 9.0 and only in a very limited fashion with DNS 9.1.

NaturallySpeaking 9.5 is available from the Nuance Web site under Support and by following the Windows Vista link. Although it appears under Vista updates DNS 9.5 is compatible with Windows XP and earlier versions of MS Office. It is a complete program and not just a patch and it is FREE. The downside is that it is a 1.06 MB download.

Yes, you're absolutely

Yes, you're absolutely right, Graham. I'm a chump. At one time I think I did have 9.5, downloaded just as you say. But was it on my IBM T40 which runs on XP, or on the Toshiba which runs on VISTA? I just don't remember.

Right now I'm not even using the Toshiba because VISTA is too much of a challenge when you have no use of your hands.
And I wish I hadn't upgraded the T 40 to 2007 because I was perfectly happy with it before.

But what Word version did I have? I don't have any program disks. All I know is that my hard drive version of Outlook is 2000.

How do I go about downgrading MS Word? How about downgrading VISTA to XP?

I am sorry to hear you are still having all those problems with Vista, Dragon, and Office 2007. I agree, you will benefit from a roll back to XP and Office 2003. You can still use Dragon 9.5 with these.

I would not recommend trying to uninstall. Your best bet is to do a complete reinstall of XP from scratch. The ThinkPad T40 has a hidden partition that allows you to reformat the disk and reinstall XP as it came from the factory. I do not recall exactly how to get to this, but try tapping F1, F2, the Delete key or the oval IBM Access (something like that) button on boot up. It takes about an hour to rebuild the hard drive. Make sure to allow XP to go search for and apply all updates. This may also take a long time.

Good luck.

Didn't mean to suggest I'd

Didn't mean to suggest I'd put Vista on my old computer, the T40. That's still operating under XP. My problem was I updated its Word program to 7.0, and I didn't want to had all the space that 9.5 requires. How do I restore my documents to Word 2003?

No, I don't have the original Office 2003 discs; I think my IBM came pre-loaded. Will someone sell me a used copy? Or is Windows now giving it away?

On my Toshiba Satellite I'm now working with Vista, Office 2007 and Dragon 9.5 (and my malfunctioning Andrea headset finally got replaced by the manufacturer). In short, everything is working fine.

Thanks,

Matthew
