Using ViaVoice With Ultech's Caption MIC
Hello to all, Recently was searching and stumbled across this forum which seem perfect for my questions.
I have quite a few but will not overload anyone right off the bat, I will use one question to start off with, one that has been bugging myself and some fellow coworkers since we all started using CaptionMic.
First off some background, There are about 10 of us hired on as Captioners to work for a major National TV station, we have been up and running for about 9 months now and have been broadcasted on the air for about 5 months.
We all started out reading in the stories to start a voice model and began right away with echoing as much as possible.
out of the 10 of us we use about 4 computers (not at once but this is so we can switch without having to use the same computer) we each do 1 hour sessions, and then hand it off to the next person in line.
Now that you have some background Ill explain my question.
While correcting I do use the correction window instead of just typing it into the text, however I noticed that when The program takes two words, and interprets as one word, and I correct it, the voice from the word will be gone.
For instance : When I speak "Can See" the program interprets that as "Concede" when I type Can See in the correction window (or even select Can See from the list) the Voice for that is lost and does not play.
Does this mean that it did not recognize the correction, because even now I myself will have trouble with Can See coming up as Concede, even when spoken clearly and slowly.
Any advice would be appreciated.
(speaking of clearly and slowly....unfourantly that is not always an option for us as the people we have to echo sometimes get very excited and speak very quickly. But Ive noticed that over time the program adapts very well to this type of speaking if it remains consistant.)

When you use the Correction Window, if the corrected words are recognised by ViaVoice, it will not ask for new pronunciations. The only time it asks you to record a pronunciation is when the corrected word is not recognised.
Try dictating a strange name that you can pronounce. It will probably come up with some rubbish, and you will then correct it using the Correction Window, and if the name is not recognised, it will ask you to train it.
If you want to train a particular phrase as a phrase, you then tick the "add words as a phrase" box, and it will ask you to train it.

Appreciate the help Quentin,
Appreciate the help Quentin, And I agree that this should not be a sales forum, either way I just work for the company, they choose the program not I.
Anyway, I appreciate the answer, I do use the correction window to train a word that it does not know, however "Can see" should be something it knows, I have been using it for about 9 months now. I would like to know basically if there is no audio attached to the words in the correction, then does the program still know what I meant by it, or should i have to revoice it? and when I revoice it how I say it, and it still does not come up...where should i go from here? Change the way I speak? sorry to sound pessimisstic....just things im upset that my employer is not handling
If the words are already in
If the words are already in the vocabulary, such as can and see, then it will not re-record these words. The problem clearly must be with your enunciation. I certainly had no problems with either the words "can see" and "concede". I simply dictated them as you see them here.
The alternative method, as I suggested, is to record the words (two or more) as a phrase, and it will then ask you to record, unless that phrase is already in the custom dictionary.
To determine whether they are in the custom dictionary, click on the ViaVoice button, click on Tools, and click on "manage my vocabulary". Put the focus in the dictionary and type the first two letters of the word or words you were looking for, and you should locate it or them quite easily. If you have VV 10.5, the dictionary is in strict alphabetical order. However in 10 or earlier versions they are not, and in which case it will be more difficult to locate the word or words, but they can be found with a little patience.
Having located the word or words, you can then train or delete them. If you want to do a complete re-recording, delete them. Then dictate the word or words, and unless they are in the general dictionary, they will require recording.

Quentin, We apologize if our
Quentin, We apologize if our response sounds like advertising but many of our answers go in that direction because we believe in what we do. Complaining about our anti-ViaVoice stance isn't going to change the facts. We have stated this before but will reiterate the following indisputable facts:
1. All development for ViaVoice was discontinued many years ago
2. When NaturallySpeaking 10 is released, ViaVoice will be discontinued
3. ViaVoice will never work with Windows Vista which will eventually be a major problem for anyone using a PC
4. Out of a hundred or so magazine articles that compared ViaVoice 10 to NaturallySpeaking 7, only 1 found ViaVoice to be more accurate and that was by a smidgen. It is well-known that DNS 8 is significantly more accurate than DNS 7 and DNS 9 is significantly more accurate than DNS 8 so it's hard to argue with the math.
5. ViaVoice Technical Support hasn't existed in years and although this forum does a pretty good job, it has its limitations. Sometimes virtual on-site technical support is what is necessary and since no one's making a living using ViaVoice, virtual on-site support will probably be next to impossible to find.
We understand that dj29’s employers are insistent on using ViaVoice and we probably won't change their minds but we do feel obligated to warn them. We are a major speech recognition vendor and if ViaVoice was worth selling, we would carry it because we are already Gold licensed and certified by Nuance. ViaVoice isn't even sold in the United States (other than on the Nuance web site). That should tell you everything you need to know.
We understand that you're getting great accuracy with ViaVoice but we doubt it happened overnight and dj29’s employers should be thinking about efficiency (commands) and dictation; not just dictation. Macros are the other half of the efficiency equation and ViaVoice is a total joke when it comes to command technology. Dragon System’s archaic circa ‘91 DragonDictate (16 years ago) included a significantly better macro program than ViaVoice 10. It's no surprise that IBM threw in the towel when DNS 7 was released.
For anyone who is considering starting with ViaVoice, we think their time would be much better spent with the Vista speech engine and we do not sell Vista or work for Microsoft.

We are not ViaVoice
We are not ViaVoice experts but your question will probably be answered by one of the local ViaVoice enthusiasts who frequent this forum but we have a question for you. Why use speech recognition software that is only 45% as accurate as NaturallySpeaking and was discontinued several years ago? You are in a serious business and the higher the accuracy you can acquire the better off you will be so why use out of date consumer tools? ViaVoice is equivalent to a mechanic purchasing his tools at Kmart.
Note: We recently found a way to significantly increase NaturallySpeaking's accuracy by eliminating 2/3 of its bloated 150,000 Word vocabulary. We plan on releasing this technology sometime next week.

It is unfortunate that KnowBrainer frequently writes a load of rubbish, and this is another occasion.
There is nothing wrong with ViaVoice, and it is an excellent SR package. I have always found it more user friendly than DNS. To say it is only 45 per cent of the accuracy of DNS is further rubbish. With proper enunciation, it is just as accurate. For KnowBrainer to state "ViaVoice is equivalent to a mechanic purchasing his tools at Kmart" is probably as insulting as he can get. I would say that the choice of ViaVoice and DNS is equivalent to the choice between Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars.
KnowBrainer takes every possible opportunity to run down ViaVoice in order to promote DNS as a sales product from himself.
Those using ViaVoice are generally quite happy with it, and I'm quite sure they do not need to know that DNS is also available, since they will probably be fully aware of this.
I make another appeal to KnowBrainer to stop running down ViaVoice at every possible opportunity that he sees.
This is not as sales forum, and I think that Administrator should now ban all this advertising by KnowBrainer, and if necessary remove him from membership of this site if he is not prepared to desist from this self-promotion.

I am sorry I am replying to the wrong thread but cannot find a post new thread button on the screen where is it ?
Does anyone out there use VR totally or with a mouse to do a full time job ? Is that possible ? I have RSI to such a degree that using a computer for only half and hour a day would be too much for me to the point where I have been forced to do low paid shop work instead of office work.
I cannot stand being this poor !

Although we sell speech
Although we sell speech recognition software, microphones, specialty vocabularies and command software for a living, we also use the technology to the max! Even if we were not selling speech recognition products, we would still run our company with NaturallySpeaking and KnowBrainer 2006 because time is money and even though we are not physically disabled we have to do whatever it takes in order to keep up with the business. Processing credit cards by hand or even clicking the Reply button in an e-mail is far too inefficient for us. However, KnowBrainer was actually designed for the physically disabled.
Every aspect of our company is run by speech recognition. Our shipping commands perform so many functions that they take about 4 minutes to deploy. If we say “California Home Ground” a KnowBrainer command will perform approximately 100 different movements from saving and naming the file to a specific folder to answering 40 or so questions on the DHL web site and printing a label, all while we wrap the package. We don't even dial phone numbers because it takes too much time to do it manually.
We are one of the world's largest NaturallySpeaking vendors but we have plenty of time to respond to postings which are also done completely hands-free. Our contact information is below:
