Where is the Speech Recognition community?
In 2002, I developed severe RSI that got me actively using Dragon NaturallySpeaking. At the time, I was signed up on a couple of very active and buzzing mailing-lists.
I go back to them now, and they seem all but dead. This site seemed to be a hub when I came back a year or two ago, but if I look at recent activity now, it doesn't look very active either. Nor do the mailing-lists associated with this site.
Where is everybody? Has the community split, separated, scattered and then dwindled into nothingness?
I'd welcome any information on what has happened. Just now, I feel like coming back to a town I used to live in and finding its streets empty, the people gone, the shops closed. Online ghost towns, anybody?
Of course, if there is a nest of active speech users and specialists somewhere, I'd welcome a pointer.
I'm suffering from another RSI flare-up, and though Dragon 9 used to work fine on my macbook with Parallels 2, I can't get sound in now that I've installed Parallels 3. Might not even be related to Parallels, as I can get some bad sound in Sound Recorder, but no sound on the OSX side. So, you see, troubleshooting, possible reinstallation, shopping for microphones... The kind of stuff you really can spend hours on, and would rather avoid when typing hurts.
I asked in the Parallels forum, of course, but not much help coming from there.
