Free speech recognition for gamers

Sounds interesting, but limited. If you've got speech recognition already on your computer, you probably don't need this.

Matt,

Forget it. Useless program. Even if you have DNS, most of today's good PC games are not going to work very well with it because most of the sophisticated games available for PCs currently do not use hotkeys, and make more extensive use of hot zones, fast mouse movements, and mouse clicks for which DNS and other SR applications are too slow. In many cases, speech recognition won't even work with the better games.

Yes, you can do some things with SR for some games. But the viability of DNS for such purposes is very limited. I'm familiar with the program in your hyperlink. It's a piece of junk. I also do a lot of contracting work for games companies with regard to product design and marketing in working with their development engineers. You would have to write a completely different SR application to work with most games efficiently and effectively, as well as completely.

Sorry, but I completely disagree. I spend a lot of time playing PC games, and I have to say that software like this is of great value.

Recently I have been using Shoot, another free voice recognition software and it works great, although slightly fiddly to set up.

I just found out about Pilfius, its a lot newer than shoot but already I can see that its a much easier application to use, and its only been out a short time.

Most games use the keyboard to a fair degree. FPS games need it to move, select weapons, reload etc. RTS games use it to select different options. Flight and Racing simulators will use joysticks and steering wheels but there will still be functions assigned to the keyboard. So having one button which you can press and say these commands is a massive help.

For example, I just used Pilfius to set up a profile for Silent Hunter 4 (a WW2 submarine sim) which took me 10minutes. All I have to do is hold F and say what I want doing, 'Ahead Full' 'Periscope Depth' 'Silent Running' it all works. It even adds immersion as I feel like I'm giving the orders, I say it and the virtual crew does it.

Another example, Armed Assault, a military sim. I can use Pilfius to select AI squad members and give orders or reply to orders given to me by an AI squad leader.

There is no technical problem with an application like Pilfius so there is no reason why this application should be deemed 'useless' especially only a week after its first public release.

Admittedly, I wouldn't want to use Pilfius for controlling Windows, but I don't need it to, it does exactly what it should, provides voice recognition for games.

Pilfius is an application made by a gamer, for gamers. The guy knows what needs doing as he is a gamer himself.

Finally, I say this, if you are a gamer, you should already see the value of this application, if you're not, then you won't need it anyway.

I'm curious how you came up with the name for it. What does it mean if anything?

In short, I was looking for a name that a) wasn't already taken, b) sounded cheery c) was easy to remember d)was somehow related to speech.

Though it sounds Latin, "PiLfIuS" is not a word in any language. It's actually the word "Lip" inverted, plus two letters from "InFerioris" and "SUperioris" (medical terms for upper and lower lips), also inverted. Note the capitalization makes sense.

Since I was also toying with the concept of "command", the name fit the bill perfectly. I can easily see a Roman general being called Pilfius Maximus.

Hm. I bet that would mean "Big Lips" in English.

Thanks for the explanation!
