I doubt it is the

I doubt it is the SpeechMike.

Using a SpeechMike, I have always found there is always delay in DNS between speech and printing on screen, but I have never seen 20 seconds delay.

That is the one advantage of ViaVoice, in that the faster the CPU, the faster it appears on screen and it is almost instantaneous, and it is one of the many reasons I prefer to use ViaVoice. Even with my "old"! AMD Semperon 1.8 GHz, it is still almost instantaneous with ViaVoice. Smiling

The biggest cause of delays is those annoying text messages that come up, without warning, in Skype from electronics sellers in Hong Kong - the nearest thing to phone spam Sad

If you can duplicate this

If you can duplicate this with another kind of mike, then you suspect a problem with DNS and/or system. Otherwise, you look at the SpeechMike and its drivers.

Also, is this a new phenomenon or have you always had it with the SpeechMike? If its new, try to think of any system changes roughly coincidental with the change.

You need to give us more

You need to give us more information about your computer. How fast is your processor, what operating system are you using and how much RAM does it have?

We don't recommend Quinton's advice on purchasing ViaVoice because ViaVoice has been discontinued for several years and one of the reasons why it runs faster is because it is equivalent to comparing WordPad to Microsoft Word (smaller profile) or comparing DNS Ver. 5 to Ver. 9. When NaturallySpeaking is taking 20 seconds to process a simple phrase then you have a problem that isn't going to go away by adding ViaVoice. You either have a computer problem (lack of RAM, too many processes running, interference) or your Audio Setup Wizard input level is off. If you haven't done so, try rerunning the Audio Setup Wizard to rule this possibility out of the equation because it's the simplest and least expensive solution. Your computer should also have a least 1 Gb RAM if you're running Windows XP.

Why do you not read read the words as written? Where,in my posting, did I advise "purchasing ViaVoice".

Incidently it does not say much for whatever speech recognition programme you are using that it still cannot spell my name, and you obviously do not proofread what you write. Jawdropping!

It could just be me but your ViaVoice endorsement certainly sounded like you are trying to sell it. Surely you can see how “it is one of the many reasons why I prefer to use ViaVoice” phrase might be interpreted that way.

I guess you didn't notice your “read read” when you were picking on our proofreading Eye-wink. I apologize for misspelling your name as it was not intentional. I have contributed over 10,000 postings (answers) on various forums in my career and I figure most posters are more concerned with my being able to come up with a solution rather than being overly concerned with my spelling but if I'm wrong, perhaps some of them will come to your defense. I’ll wait…

That was deliberate. The second "read" should have been emboldened, but I forgot to turn on the rich text to do this. The other alternative would have been to put the second "read" in upper case, but that is shouting and I do not do that in postings Smiling

Pcdoc47 the time delay is up

Pcdoc47
the time delay is up to 20 sec. the computer there are 3 a 1.8ghz 2 2.0ghz all have 1g ram running xp pro

I have just noticed that I

I have just noticed that I have improved the time delay from speech to words on screen (and incidentally improved accuracy) when, using Startup Cop, I disabled all my startup programmes to install a new programme, and following this, I then went straight into ViaVoice and dictated. The speed and accuracy improved no end.

I then activated AVG and Zone Alarm and went online, and even with this, the speed and accuracy did not deteriorate.

Normally, my automatic start up programmes consist of AVG, Zone Alarm firewall, Skype, SpeechMike control, Windows Defender, Spamfighter, MSGTAG, Nifty Notes, Task Manager and ViaVoice, and it can take up to four minutes for booting to be completed.

I suspect that any delays that are experienced could be due to the anti-virus and firewall being introduced at startup, and this could be one of the causes of your long delay problem.

Startup Cop can be found here http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2097,00.asp and is a worthwhile buy for the control that it gives you.

When you are not speaking is

When you are not speaking is the VU meter yellow or green? If it is green then probably the volume is set too high. Run the "check your audio settings" and talk a little louder than normal at the first step.
