VoicePower, the Dragon tutor
Submitted by Martin Markoe on Fri, 06/29/2007 - 20:31.
VoicePower, the Dragon NaturallySpeaking software tutor, received a great review in Rehab Engineer.
eMicrophones does Dragon training in the New York metropolitan area.
We tell clients they can save their money and just use VoicePower as
it is like having any computer tutor sitting next to you.

Strong recommendation!
Strong recommendation! Maybe someone who's used it could add some feedback. I'd like to be able to point newbies to a tool like this.

Everything I've heard about it is good thus far. Wish I could run it, but I need a new system to do that. I managed to get locked into an Asus CUSL-2 mobo that only allows 512MB ram... ARRRGGGHHH!!

You can use any of the following commands
while in any application:
Show Basic commands
Show Correction commands
Show Dragon commands
Show navigation commands
Show Outlook commands
Show formatting commands
Show deletion commands
Show web commands etc. etc. etc.
There are tutorials, lessons, demonstrations, examples, and a zillion commands.
A zillion is only a minor exaggeration.
I use the window placement commands quite often:
Place program left or Place window left (same thing)
Place program lower left
Place program center
Place window upper right
etc.
The bottom line is, if you can afford it buy it; if you can't
buy it anyway.

The product description contains the following statement:
"The Preferred Edition of VoicePower DOES NOT include the custom commands for Microsoft Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint that are included in VoicePower Professional."
With this limitation, why is the Preferred version is only $16 cheaper than the Professional version?

Unfortunately VoicePower is English only.

Pretty much so. I was only checking out the forum because of an issue with degrading accuracy on DNS 9.5 when I came across this thread.
I have owned Voicepower for about 6 months and it is simply excellent. Bit pricey, but it is extremely useful for increasing productivity. It combines help, tuition and extra commands in one package. When I have a bit of time to spare I'll post a more comprehensive reply and explanation of the features.

I am so very much attracted
I am so very much attracted to VoicePower, just reading the product description.
I am currently using DNS9 Preferred and had been thinking of upgrade to the Pro version. Would Voice Power provide the macro command capability that the Pro version have (in terms of the commands being already included in VP and eliminating the need for me to create macro commands)?
Thanks in advance for any input.
It sounds like powerful
It sounds like powerful macro capabilities are more important to you than assistance (which is freely readily available to you on the various speech recognition forums) and if that is the case, you may be looking at the wrong product.
VoicePower is an excellent NaturallySpeaking help tool but that is what the program specializes in. It also includes some additional helpful commands but macros are not it’s #1 function and does not enable you to create additional commands in DNS Preferred. However, KnowBrainer 2006 includes over 11,000 commands (because this is what KnowBrainer specializes in) that you can edit, copy and individually activate/deactivate. It also includes its own Command Browser which will allow you to create personal Advanced-Scripting commands in DNS Preferred. This capability is normally only available in the professional versions of NaturallySpeaking. In many ways, adding KB 2006 to DNS Preferred is equivalent to DNS Professional on steroids. KnowBrainer was created in 1993 and has been marketed since 1996. It is the original third-party add-on macro package for DragonDictate/NaturallySpeaking.
VoicePower includes high-end NaturallySpeaking assistance in the form of easy-to-use visual aids but KnowBrainer also includes our 50 page Quick Tips help file and you already have free access many of the world's leading speech recognition experts at the KnowBrainer Speech Recognition Forum.

We aren't completely certain
We aren't completely certain but we believe both programs will run simultaneously because neither program steals the microphone’s focus. In fact, there's a reasonably good chance that both programs will complement each other because VoicePower includes stunning help menu windows that appear right alongside your program while KnowBrainer specializes in pre-fab commands, power commands and the ability to create commands via our patent pending VerbalBasic (the ability to create commands by voice).
HOT OFF THE PRESS:
Within the next few weeks KnowBrainer will also include the ability to make NaturallySpeaking perform faster and improve its accuracy by introducing a 50,000 word medium-size vocabulary which we are testing this weekend. Other than an empty dictation vocabulary, the only vocabulary that NaturallySpeaking currently includes is an obese 150,000 word large-size vocabulary. We're also planning on releasing a very small 2000 word vocabulary that will allow end users to build their own highly specialized vocab for even greater accuracy and speed.

no, the issue is whether or not the software will coexist. I was hoping that somebody had already tried it. I don't think the hardware is an issue in this case.
(Incidentally, it was only a short 12 months ago that my dual core AMD processor, 3 GB of RAM, and 64 bit Windows XP was sufficient to eliminate the hardware as a possible cause for holding back the performance of DNS. To keep up with the Joneses now , you need at least a quad core Intel, DDR2 memory , and Vista. Perhaps for Christmas

In answer to Nina's
In answer to Nina's question:
The Professional version of VoicePower works with the Preferred version and it would be unlikely that you'd need to add more commands.
You should know that VoicePower has released a major new version this week and will soon making an announcement.
VoicePower now has well over 10,000 commands. What's more you can see all 10,000 or 12,000+ commands as you work, without interruption, with its patent-pending speech interface.
Amongst the 10,000 or 12,000 commands that VoicePower includes are major commands that no other product offers. For one, you can open files located anyplace on your computer or network within seconds with a couple of simple commands. (No macro development necessary.)
For two, VoicePower makes Select-and-Say practically universal. It enables you to select and copy text from the Internet or any other application in two steps.
VoicePower offers a completely interactive training system containing both an easy-to-use Quick Start Wizard and the most comprehensive training guide available - which you can view as you work.
VoicePower also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee with a catch. If we ever have a customer who wants their money back, we would want an explanation of why VoicePower didn't work for them so we can make certain that it will never happen again.
Perhaps one reason that VoicePower customers don't frequent user forums is because we live up to our motto: "Learn by doing."
Or, as Confucius said: "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand."

Thank you so much for your
Thank you so much for your replies!
Although my primary purpose of wanting Voice Power is getting macro command capability, I like the idea of having a "tutor sitting in next to you" as Martin mentioned.
I have been using DNS since Version 7, but my mastery of the software has been limited to what I need for my job (use with Microsoft Word mainly). I don't feel I'm making full use of its potential, since I easily resort to using the keyboard and mouse whenever I get stumped dealing with situations with DNS--just what I'm doing right now... (^。^;)
Most of all, I live in Japan and know zero people who have any understanding of speech recognition. So, my source of info had been fora and user groups like this.
I've recommended DNS to people suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome, but they've never been able to get a decent grasp of how the software is used. With Voice Power, I feel that I may be able to gain greater confidence in using DNS and be of help to people I know.
Thank you also to Lunis, I've actually been ruminating over buying your software for some time but think I'll opt for VP for the reason I've mentioned.
Thank you again. (・_・)(._.) (Japanese emoticon for "bow")
Nina We do not yet know
Nina
We do not yet know if VoicePower has the ability to accept personal Advanced-Scripting commands but that would make a significant difference between our 2 products, since Nuance charges 4.5 times more for this capability in DNS Pro so we are giving Ron a challenge. If you send us an e-mail at Support@KnowBrainer.com we will give you a fully functioning non-expiring NFR copy of KnowBrainer 2006. Hopefully Ron will meet our challenge by offering you the same deal and you can post back with a personal comparison of the 2 products.

>>> The Professional
>>> The Professional version of VoicePower works with the Preferred version and it would be unlikely that you'd need to add more commands<<<
Our apologies for sounding rude but we think your statement “it would be unlikely that you'd need to add more commands” is completely ridiculous. You cannot possibly anticipate every need from every end-user. What about the person who wants to print to the color printer down the hall rather than the default laser printer in their office? What about the person that wants to open that Hawaii folder in the Microsoft Outlook Inbox? What about the person who wants to save files to their Work folder? You get the idea. Existing prefab commands are only 50% of the command equation. The ability to easily create commands, for any application or globally, can be just as important. If it wasn't, DNS Pro might not retail for 4.5 times more than DNS Preferred. In KnowBrainer you not only have the ability to run your entire computer hands-free but you can also create commands by voice.
You didn't mention it so we thought we should ask. Does VoicePower include a Command Browser that will allow you to create commands for DNS Preferred or are you limited to your prefab commands?
>>> VoicePower now has well over 10,000 commands. What's more you can see all 10,000 or 12,000+ commands as you work, without interruption, with its patent-pending speech interface. <<<
Similar view/editing/copying/deactivating capabilities were built into KnowBrainer and released to the public on December 25, 2005 and our VerbalBasic technology (the ability to create commands by voice) is also patent pending. KnowBrainer is the original third-party macro package to support NaturallySpeaking and has been around since 1995.
[>>> VoicePower makes Select-and-Say practically universal. It enables you to select and copy text from the Internet or any other application in two steps. <<<
This feature has been available in KnowBrainer since 2002.
>>> VoicePower also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee with a catch. If we ever have a customer who wants their money back, we would want an explanation of why VoicePower didn't work for them so we can make certain that it will never happen again. <<<
KnowBrainer now also includes a 30 day customer satisfaction moneyback guarantee and KnowBrainer 2006 customers will be able to freely upgrade to KnowBrainer 2007 which will support the Microsoft Vista speech engine which we are working on now.
Since both of our companies are offering a full refund, we recommend that Nina try both products and post back with her results. In fact, let's kick it up a notch. If Nina would like to contact us at Support@KnowBrainer.com , we will give her an NFR copy of KnowBrainer to compare against VoicePower. Hopefully Ron will be willing to do the same and hopefully Nina will be willing to post her results here

I take it these two things are separate qualities of VoicePower?

perhaps VoicePower customers, by some magic, never enounter error messages saying (e.g.) 'maximum amount of speech data (etc.)' or when they do, know -- as if by magic -- what they mean and what to do about them?

Judy,
VoicePower allows you to select and copy text directly from Internet Explorer and almost all other applications in two steps. For example, the user can copy text from a website by issuing a Select-and-Say command, e.g., "Select allows you through Microsoft Word." The selected text is copied into the clipboard and can be pasted with the "Paste That" command. (There are several variations on this command.)

Ron, you didn’t answer our question so we will ask again. Does VoicePower allow the end-user to create personal commands such as advanced scripting in Preferred and if it does, can you create commands by voice?
We have not yet inspected VoicePower but it sounds like a top-notch add-on for NaturallySpeaking. We suspect that the tutorials and help files are your strong point just like the ability to create advanced scripting commands are KnowBrainer's strong point but we would very much appreciate an answer to our question. If our suspicions are correct and you cannot create macros in VoicePower than we do not really have competing products and it wouldn't make much sense to conduct a comparison as this would be an apples versus oranges issue.

Lunis,

We will meet your challenge
We will meet your challenge with a $99 offer for SpeechComputing forum members on the purchase of KnowBrainer 2006 but should note that our 2 products are not really comparable. VoicePower is highly specialized with interactive help menus that sound very impressive and are not part of KnowBrainer. KB2006 specializes in the ability to create, edit, copy, deactivate and activate advanced scripting macros (similar to the professional version of NaturallySpeaking complete with a Command Browser). The only similarity between our products would be prefab commands which we have been writing for DragonDictate and later NaturallySpeaking since 1993. SpeechComputing members can compare the prefab commands but if an end-user needs something special, they will have to do it in either Vocola or KnowBrainer.
A couple of recent commands, that will be in the next revision of KnowBrainer, are Refresh and Resume. Of course current KB2006 customers can immediately add these commands. Refresh moves the cursor to the top of the page and then returns it to its original position. We wrote this command because a lot of people, including us, are seeing Microsoft Word 2007 and Outlook 2007 scrolling down the page against our will. This typically occurs when you're dictating in the middle of a page that includes a prefab ending such as e-mail.
Our new Resume moves the cursor back to the end of the current paragraph and forces capitalization of the first spoken word. Many end users, who upgrade vocabularies from previous versions of NaturallySpeaking, do not get automatic capitalization of the first word after a period or question-mark (after moving the cursor to another position in the document).
REV F (due out in the next few weeks) will also include full support for IE 7, Firefox and new global Zoom In/Out commands.
To get in on the $99 deal you will need to call us at (615) 884-4558 between 9 and 4 Monday through Friday. Like most professional vendors, we accept all forums of credit cards, are Goldstar Nuance certified/licensed and are members of the Better Business Bureau. We also include a 30 day customer satisfaction 100% moneyback guarantee.
Lunis Orcutt - Developer of KnowBrainer (DNS Command Software)
As mentioned earlier in this
As mentioned earlier in this thread, both Lunis of KnowBrainer and Ron of VoicePower offered to make their products available at half cost to users; Ron asked in return that folks post a review, preferably one comparing both products, on this forum. I have been a user of Dragon NaturallySpeaking for about six years and of KnowBrainer for about five years. About six weeks ago I took Ron up on the offer of VoicePower (I am keeping it) and I am now posting my initial reactions.
What's really important is that I believe there is no one-size-fits-all add-on for DNS. To evaluate the usefulness of this review, It's important for people to know that I am not a geek (alas) or a technically devoted user of computers. I have physical disabilities that make it impossible for me to use a keyboard for long, but I am able to mouse and type in brief spurts, so I have been able to get by without complete voice-driven command and control of my computer. My disability came on in the middle of my seeking an advanced degree while I was working full time, so I was in a hurry to make DNS as usable as possible as quickly as I could without having to learn how to do any programming or command creation on my own.
All of that being said, here are my very brief, impressionistic summaries on these two programs.
For me the biggest advantage of VoicePower is the on-screen, easily-controlled-by-voice command menus, which have led me through pretty much every command (either in VoicePower or native DNS) I have needed for Word documents, e-mailing, web research, and command-and-control functions. After a week of using VoicePower I actually believed for the first time that I could someday run my computer by voice alone.
KnowBrainer furnishes PDF & word documents (plus a hard copy booklet) listing the main preprogrammed KnowBrainer [and DNS and VerbalBasic] commands. You can call up the list of commands and help tips on the desktop by voice, but it is not like the many screens and guides VoicePower has.
In terms of the verbal style/intuitiveness/feel of the custom commands themselves, I sometimes prefer the KnowBrainer commands, and sometimes the VoicePower commands; mostly they both work just fine.
Unfortunately I am not qualified to assess KnowBrainer at all in the area for which it draws the most praise, the ability to create custom macros. I've never done it. Creating macro commands in general might be easy to do and from many online comments I believe that KnowBrainer makes it much easier, but I have never found a clear concise tutorial of the whole process in my occasional intensive immersions in reading various forums which induced me to spend the time to master the skill.
The organizational layout of the VoicePower program is occasionally not clear to me, and I have sometimes had to search thru several screens to get at the information I wanted. The benefit of mostly being easily able to look up the command I need has far outweighed this occasional confusion for me.
I obviously can't speak to what it is like to use the comprhensive VoicePower tutorial system as a novice, since I've been using DNS (and KnowBrainer) for so long; it looks as if it would be very helpful. I know that I have learned a few things about DNS that I didn't know before while using VoicePower.
Both Lunis and Ron have been generously helpful and quickly responsive to me as I have tried to learn their programs. The KnowBrainer forum, with Lunis's large presence, is a invaluable resource in the speech recognition community, and has answered questions for me at times when nobody would have been available by phone. (And told me things I wouldn't have thought to ask - plus it's a great read!)
I think if I were starting new right now, I would probably opt for VoicePower and UniVoice (which is fabulous) from KnowBrainer. If money held out, I could always acquire KnowBrainer later, when I was ready to tackle macro commands. For people who want to create individualized macros right off the bat, they might prefer starting with KnowBrainer.
Just my thoughts -- as a frequent & insightful contributor (a lawyer whose name escapes me at the moment) to these forums says, "your mileage may vary".
