Can a good USB microphone on a laptop equal a good sound card and line in microphone on a desktop?

As I said in my last post I'm thinking of going back to a corporate environment and it would be likely that I would get assigned a laptop. I know that a laptop is louder than desktops, but with a USB mic can it be just as good?

Thanks, Mark

The quick answer is yes as

The quick answer is yes as long as you choose a USB sound device that is designed for speech recognition (e.g. Andrea, VXi Two-Way or Buddy USB 5G).
A few rogue notebook computers suffer from problems of "mains hum" and other internal electical interference that can't be overcome by using a USB sound device but these cases are now very rare. Very many desktop systems that use on-board sound chips suffer from the same internal noise problems as notebooks.

The bottom line is that a professional standard microphone plus appropriate USB sound device is the equal of the same microphone with a desktop using a sound card.
