Recommended editor for Dragon?

Hi,

I'm currently working with different ways of inputting text. Sometimes I use the dictation box, sometimes it's DragonPad, sometimes I use Notepad2 (that comes with vocola), sometimes the built-in text input fields in various applications. What I'm looking for is full support of Select-and-Say (so that paragraphs are capitalized, I can correct mistakes even after returning to the application, etc.), together with useful functionality like line numbering, bookmarks, multiple open tabs. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

So far I've not found an editor which supports returning to the application and correcting the text, other than DragonPad or the dictation box.

Thanks,

Per

Just noticed a workaround,

Just noticed a workaround, which is to copy all text to the clip board, open the dictation box (which then contains your text), and click transfer. After doing that you can select any of the text in the original application.

Would still appreciate if anyone has any ideas on a good editor.

Well, that should be a great

Well, that should be a great trick! My first test in my programming IDE (Pythonwin) didn't succeed though.

Sometimes the last dictated lines of text appear to be select and say, also in a non-select and say window. In this way sometimes (eg sometimes in Windows messenger) short messages can be dictated in select and say mode.

Nevertheless the green light should be on most of the time when you want to do select and say dictation.

Actually, this is how DNS works anyway. You cannot select text outside of that which is shown on the screen. It doesn't matter what application you're using. Only displayed text is selectable and this has always been the case with every version of DNS. Don't expect anything else with any text editor.

Up to now I have not been

Up to now I have not been able to find an acceptable edit program.

There is "win32pad", which shows line numbers. But that is really the only advantage over DragonPad or notepad. (And there is of course wordpad still is select and say!)

I thought some time ago I had found something: "UltraEdit32" (UEdit). The green light was on when dictating. Nevertheless this green light goes on and off depending on the state of wrapping of long lines. And when you study the Dragons logfile you find something like:

12:09:53 Speech starting to probable edit control 0x002704c6 0x001f02ea "EditControl" mod ""

This means probably the window behaves as select and say, but not for sure.

So I support your question for a good select and say editor!

Might be worth checking out.

I've tried it out, no joy.

Have you tried TextPad from Helios Software?

Anyone know how well it

Anyone know how well it works with Emacs?

To react on both: -TextPad

To react on both:

-TextPad is not select and say either. Although it is a famous text editor, it is not fit therefore for Dragon NaturallySpeaking (which I regret).

-Emacs has VR-mode originally written by, I think, Barry Jaspan. It is incorporated, again I think, in voicecode, but only for the programming parts!

My method: when working in voicecode/Emacs, and you want to do select and say dictation, you just open the dictation box (I use a shorter (custom) command "dictate" for that). You have to change the settings of the dictation box though in order to "simulate keystrokes" instead of using the Windows paste command.

About the status of VR-Mode directly I do not know. Could be very interesting!

Well, Textpad works for me.

Well, Textpad works for me. Earlier versions didn't work as well as the current one.

Do you have the green light

Do you have the green light on? You should also check the logfile for lines like:

19:11:44 Speech starting to probable edit control 0x000e02da 0x001f08ba "EditControl" mod ""

which ultraedit shows: green light but not complete s&s.

Also when you dictate small amount of text, this text can often be handled as select and say.

When you try to select text in a larger file, opened from previous sessions, does select and say still work?

I think this green light is something that's in version 9, and I only have 8.1 installed. I never select text in a file opened from previous sessions. (I just tried it and couldn't.) But if I'm dictating into TextPad, during that session, I can say "correct [whatever it wrote that wasn't correct]" and that works. In earlier versions, corrections could be made but would not necessarily end up in the right place.

Quintijn: Now that I have

Quintijn: Now that I have v9, I can see that the green light is in fact not on in TextPad.

ultraedit is a great

ultraedit is a great programming editor...providing you can type easily - i've used it for 10+yrs...and just wrote the developer asking if he knew of any users who'd worked w/ DNS or other VR software and UEdit...but no such luck

I had discussions with the

I had discussions with the developers of UltraEdit too. No answers to the question why the green light (of NatSpeak) is often on but sometimes not and why select and say sometimes sucks.

Have you tried Scintilla? I

Have you tried Scintilla? I had good success with it a couple of years ago, although I am not using it currently, for unrelated reasons.
