viavoice standard version 10 hangs up
I have viavoice standard v10 and windows xp home edition.
When I try to run viavoice, I cannot get it to load up unless I disable my antivirus prog, NOD32. The error message refers to AppName speechbar.exe and ModName imon.dll, which appears to be something NOD antivirus uses. In fact quite often WORD will freeze on trying to load it, and the only way to consistently prevent this is to uninstall viavoice.
I did follow the instructions about installing with antivirus and firewall disabled.
Viavoice is marketed with statements about using it as you surf on the web, but if I can only use it with antivirus disabled.... this seems ridiculous.
Is there a fix for this problem, what have I done wrong??

I am not familiar with the Standard version. I can only tell you that there there have been no problems with Pro USB 10.5 using AVG and Zone Alarm as far as I'm concerned.
Clearly it is your anti-virus which is causing the problem. I am not familiar with NOD32 Anti-Virus, unless this is reference to Norton. If it is, Norton does cause problems with ViaVoice. My only suggestion would be to change your anti-virus to AVG, which can be obtained from Grisoft free. It is updated daily, sometimes twice a day, and I even noticed an update yesterday (Sunday) which is a new development.
I checked in my Windows XP, and ViaVoice bin for imon.dll, but nothing came up. Is the name of that driver correct?

NOD32 is not Norton, and I
NOD32 is not Norton, and I am sure that imon.dll is related to the antivirus software. (Just google NOD32 and imon.dll). I've just left a message at ESET (NOD32 suppliers) to see if they can help.
NOD32 works fine and I would be reluctant to change it, although I have heard good things about AVG.
FWIW, NOD32 has worked great
FWIW, NOD32 has worked great on my wife's machine for three years now -- its one of the least cycle-stealing of the AVs, yet it protects securely. But there is no SR product on her machine.

BTW, I take it that "it" in "quite often WORD will freeze on trying to load it" refers to VV? If so, try upgrading to VV 10.5, although if you're using any version of Word past 97 even that may not help. Which version of Word/Office are you using?

You do not say whether you are using 10 or 10.5. I'm not sure if Standard came out in 10.5. The way to find out is to look at the disc and see if the copyright runs up to 2004. You could also look at the disc contents and see if the files are date stamped 14th July 2004. If they are, then you have 10.5. It is they are not, then you have version 10.
Even with version 10, you should not have problems. I used it with Word 97 and WIN XP until I upgraded to 10.5, and still use Word 97 and WIN XP. 10.5 will work with all Office programmes up to 2003.
The jury is still out as to whether or not it will work in Vista. Chuck says it will not, but Rob Chambers said it would, and I am holding my opinion it until I get my hands on a Vista machine to try it out. (I have no plans to upgrade my own machines!)
I looked up imon.dll, and it does belong to NOD32.
It will be interesting to see what ESET has to say about it.

Thankyou to those of you who have commented.
ESET gave me a quick reply about NOD32 and it seems to have solved the issue.
I had to go into their IMON module and set up VV executables as exclusions so that on loading VV NOD no longer interferes with what VV tries to do.
I've tried it a few times and it has not hung up on loading so appears to be OK now.

For whatever it's worth,
For whatever it's worth, eventhough you may have disabled your anti-virus, there still may be remnants running in the background. Every anti-virus is different, but McAfee and AVG have several processes to run.
