Help with speech recognition wsing matlabs(Words only-5 words)

.I am doin speech recognition with matlab and the accuracy in recognizing the spoken word is terrible.With matlab 7.1 we were able to cut the noise prior to acquiring the signal.We basically triggered the code to accept data after the sound amplitude went above a certain level hence rejecting noise,But after the word is spoken theres is still some time left where noise is being taken.Now i tried reducing the number of samples which reduces amount of noise taken in and also tried implementing in code the rejection of certain amplitudes but it still doesnt work.Is there a matlab function that can reject the noise acquired after the input??Is there anythin else i can do to better accuracy?
