Commands in Dictation Mode

Hi everyone, I just have a question. Is there any way to create specific commands that work in Dictation mode, in place of "Switch to Normal Mode". I'm trying to bypass the "Switch to __" command and save a document immediately after with a "Save Note" command. So far from what I gather, this is not possible, but if there is a way it'd be nice to know. Thanks!

What version do you have?

What version do you have? You can only write commands in Pro -- or with the Vocola or UniVoice add-ons in lower versions.

If you describe you're problem in more detail, someone might be able to suggest a different approach.

Sorry, I am using Dragon NS

Sorry, I am using Dragon NS Pro v9. I don't really have a problem, I was just wondering if there is any way to make commands that work in Dictation mode, such in a way that "Correct ___" works while in Dictation mode. That's all.

  This is a great idea

This is a great idea but as you previously surmised, NaturallySpeaking only has a handful of commands that can be deployed when you are in Dictation Mode and they are listed in the Vocabulary Editor.  Some of these commands include new paragraph, new line etc.

What you're asking for is relatively easy to do and we made this recommendation to the manufactures of NaturallySpeaking on several occasions but so far, no interest.  This type of command technology probably cannot be performed without some changes being made to the core technology which only the NaturallySpeaking developers have access to.

Interestingly enough, a company in Texas was able to accomplish this feat with the Microsoft Windows XP speech engine so nothing is impossible.  It simply isn't available yet.

KnowBrainer is correct in that it can be done. However, the reason that it likely will never be done is the fact that it defeats the entire purpose of "dictation mode.". That mode was designed way back with the first version of large vocabulary, continuous dictation SR programs to be specifically for dictation only.

Why would the developers want to defeat the purpose of dictation mode. This is an old question that was answered many many years ago by the L&H product managers and R&D staff, myself included. They simply said, when it was requested to add additional commands to dictation mode, "No, that's not what dictation mode is intended for by definition and technical specification."

In short, if you design an automobile to get 100 miles per gallon, why in God's name would you want to add a 950 hp Nitro burning engine to it. That is why there are clear distinctions between dictation mode, normal mode, command mode, and spell mode. They are designed for specific purposes and changing them defeats those purposes.

However, although Natural Language Commands, global commands, and custom commands are not supported, switching modes, "switch to (mode)" is supported. In addition, the underlying Select-and-Say functions are maintained during "dictation mode". Therefore, if you simply say "switch to normal mode" perform your desired function, such as correction, and then switch back to dictation mode, DNS remembers all of your previous utterances and dictation even though you were in dictation mode. With a little bit of practice this becomes very natural. I do it every day without thinking about it. That is, I switch back and forth between modes as I need them or they become useful for specific purposes. It doesn't cost me any time, it isn't unproductive, and it has become quite natural to do so. I can do it without skipping a beat.

In other words, it's not a question of whether or not it can be done. It's obvious from the fact that the DNS speech engine is a "MREC" engine (i.e., Multimodal RECognizer) that it can be done. The issue is that it won't be done for the reasons specified above.
