Soundcard and Mic input question
Submitted by vayup on Fri, 03/23/2007 - 20:52.
I use DNS 9.10 preferred for text editting. It's time for me to buy a new microphone. I have a choice of either buying an USB microphone or a line-in microphone.
1) Other things(quality of other hardware, software driver etc.) being equal which of the two interfaces (can potentially) offer high-quality audio input?
2) If I am using an USB microphone, the audio is already available in digital. Does that mean that my internal soundcard is completely bypassed?

If all things are equal, it does not matter whether you use a microphone with USB input or a microphone with Mic In input. To use Line in input you would need an amplifier. In other words, if you take for example one of our best headset microphones, say the Sennheiser ME3 modified for speech recognition, and connect it to a Sound Blaster* sound card or an Andrea USB Soundpod, you would get equally high accuracy and noise canceling with this microphone.
Although sound ships on computers are getting much better, there are two reasons to use a USB sound input instead of the onboard sound chip:
1. The USB Soundpod almost assures you off clean audio input because it bypasses the noisy interior of the computer by inputting the audio directly to the computer bus through the USB port.
2. By using a USB Soundpod, you can make your user profile portable from one computer to the next because you are using the same sound input quality and level.
