ViaVoice 10 Pro on Win XP Pro SP2 - slow/hang
First of all, hi all (this is my first post in this forum)...
Thus, the problem:
I have ViaVoice 10 Pro, installed on Windows XP Professional with Office XP.
The installation process seems worked fine (of course, no firewall enabled, no antivirus enabled),
but, unfortunately, there are a lot of problems with the user interface: with ViaVoice started, the
UI hang (i.e. long pause when I open a new Word document or a Character Dialogbox).
The interface behaviour is fine again if I close the ViaVoice toolbar... the strange thing is that
ViaVoice works fine on a Windows 2000 + Office Xp installation. Thus, the problem seems relate mostly
to Windows XP...
Any hints?
Thanks in advantage
G.

We believe you need to
We believe you need to upgrade to ViaVoice 10.5 for full Windows XP compatibility.

Since you have no problem
Since you have no problem with 2000, it has to be an XP problem. However you do not say whether you have XP SP1 or 2.
If you look at previous threads relating to VV, you'll see my references to the problems with XP as against no problems with 2000. For example the ViaVoice text-to-speech will not work on my XP computer, but works perfectly on my 2000. Even though I have set my Speechbar to floating, frequently when XP starts up (it is in my start-up programs) I get the taskbar view, I close VV, and restart it and the floating Speechbar appears without problems.
It may well be that upgrading to 10.5 might assist.
Have you done a virus and spyware scan? Many of these problems are caused by these.
It might be worth considering uninstalling Office XP and ViaVoice, and re-installing them in that order. In doing this, you should make sure that the Registry has been cleaned out of all references to these programmes before re-installing.

Thanks for your reply Well,
Thanks for your reply
Well, the SO is Windows XP Professional, SP. 2
The computer is a "fresh" installed... with SO e Office XP. Then I installed the VV.
It seems that the only solution is upgrading to 10.5. Thus can I assume that VV 10.0 doesn't work properly on Windows XP Professional SP 2?
Thanks

I published the following
I published the following blog about a week ago:-
"I was setting up a friend's Toshiba 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo laptop, 1024 Gb Ram, WIN XP Professional SP2 , and as an experiment I installed Office 97, then VV 10.5, together with my existing voice files and macros, and a Speechmike USB 6274. As I was feeling lazy, I did not disable the windows firewall, but there was no Anti-Virus running. I simply unblocked when the blocking pop up messages appeared.
The speed and accuracy in Word were phenomenal. There was almost instant response on screen and the results were very impressive. It made my 1.8 GHz Semperon seemed like a carthorse in comparison to a the Intel Core 2 Duo racehorse!
Of course only time will tell whether it continues like this after the Anti-Virus and all the additional programmes are added."
In my view, there is no reason why the same results would be different with Office XP.
To check compatibility, click on the Speechbar, go to User Options \ Tools \ Work With Navigation Macros, and check out what macros are available for Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc. These will show the versions. If XP (which I think is Office 2002) is shown, then your version is compatible. In fact, thinking about it, this should be the situation since it works in Win 2000.
Therefore I suspect that you have an XP, or virus, problem which is interfering with your operation.

Well, I agree with you... I
Well, I agree with you...
I will check on Speechbar to see if there are problems.
I think that the problem is something related to Windows XP configuration (not Office XP), because
the strange behaviour is reported in different application (WordPad, NotePad, even in the SpeechPad
itself).
I also tried disabling the cftmon.exe without results...
Check for virus and didn't found (as expected, because the PC is new, from scratch).

I have heard of problems in
I have heard of problems in new computers with pre-installed XP SP 2.
In your case, it could be as a result of the mass-production of the computer resulting in errors in the XP software installation. It might be worth downloading SP2 and installing it, together with all the following updates, and this might resolve the problems you are encountering.
If you decide to do this, I suggest that you make a complete image backup of your XP, and store it somewhere safely so that if there are problems after updating, you can always replace the backup image. Hopefully you haven't got too many programs installed, otherwise it will be a bit of a pain reinstalling your programs on the updated XP.
