Help! What desktop computers are compatible with dragon?

My computer's hard drive is starting to go; I think it's time to buy a new computer and I want to make darn sure it's compatible with dragron.

I have dragon 8.1 and find it a little frustrating to use as it is very slow on my computer (a dell optiplex with 512k memory and a 1.3 processor) (though feedback from an earlier post helped the speed a bit, thanks). I am a fiction writer (long documents that really SLOW down Dragon) and use the computer for writing and the internet; I won't need to spend money on a graphics card for games or anything like that.

I have an Andrea anc-750 microphone.

From what I can see, I should be able to get a good, fast computer for about a grand.

So, my questions are:
1. Since the wallet is open, should I/is there any advantage to upgrading to dragon 9.0? In terms of speed and accuracy? Right now, accuracy is so-so and typing is WAY faster than using Dragon (and I have done everything on the Fighting The SLOWS list).

2. Are there any computers which work particularly well or poorly with Dragon? Including design your own systems like Velocity. I believe I read somewhere here that HP's aren't terribly compatible as too loud?

3. I plan on getting at least 2gig of memory and a very fast processor. Is any processor better/worse over another with regard to dragon?

4. What do I need to make sure I get in the way of sound cards/noise control thingamabobbers?

5. Is Windows Vista the way to go or are there compatibility issues with Dragon?

6. Anything else I need to make sure I take care of when I pick a new computer compatible with Dragon?

Thanks so much!! --Kate

We believe your biggest

We believe your biggest problem is those long documents.  Try breaking your documents up into temporary 30 to 60 page chapters while dictating.  You should see a major increase in speed and efficiency. Now onto your questions…

1.  Our DNS 9 Review may best answer this question but we will just add one caveat: Version 9 is 15% more accurate

2.  From a speed issue, you will have a difficult time NOT finding a computer that's fast enough these days.

3.  You can't go wrong with AMD or Intel but we recommend avoiding the crippled chips.

4.  Go with the Sound Blaster PCI card or a simple ANC USB Pod external USB soundcard

5.  If possible, stay away from Windows Vista until it's ready for prime time.  We currently only recommend Windows XP.

Appears that you and I have

Appears that you and I have asked similar questions at about the same time. A reader directed me to your thread. Please also see http://www.speechcomputing.com/node/1186 .
I agree with the comment re: continuing to use XP. I see no reason at all to switch to Vista at this point.

I am brand new at this, so am hesitant to make any comments. However, I would think that it is important to have very fast front end bus speeds, fast as well as big RAM, and probably a large Level 2 cache. (If any of those sound wrong to you engineers, it's because I don't know much!). Lee Wagner
