Why does windows firewall block vvmapi?

My Windows XP computer was recently updated with the addition of Service Pack 2, so I now have a real firewall for the first time. The firewall blocked vvmapi and gave me the following choices: "Keep blocking", "Unblock", "Ask me later". Vvmapi is a file in C:\Program Files\ViaVoice\Bin. Why would ViaVoice be attempting to accept a connection from the Internet? And what is vvmapi’s function, accepting a connection to the Internet? I think my computer was on-line at the time, but I was only using the calculator on the Desktop. I have a dial-up connection. Has anyone else experienced blocking of vvmapi? I would appreciate any wisdom that ViaVoice-users or others can impart.

The reason is that VV uses

The reason is that VV uses TCP/IP for its operation. Chuck can give a more detailed technical explanation than I can.

Have you tried disabling the firewall to see how this is affecting it?

Personally, using XP SP2, I use the free ZoneAlarm as my firewall, and do not use the XP firewall. I had heard so many bad reports about the effect of XP firewall in relation to VV that I decided not to use it.

Quentin, I apologize for

Quentin,

I apologize for being so slow in responding to your reply. Thank you for your advice. So far I haven't had any more problems with the Windows Firewall interfering with ViaVoice. However if I do in the future, I'll remember ZoneAlarm.
