self-introduction

Hi,
My name is Joe and I am a long time user of DragonDictate. I continue to use DragonDictate because it is superior to even the latest versions of Dragon NaturallySpeaking for hands-free computer control. (I have very limited usage of my hands).
I am currently using DragonDictate (classic version 3.02) under Windows 98 SE. I will soon (~one month) be migrating to a computer running Windows XP. I am also currently having some problems running some of the DragonDictate mouse commands when I set my screen to high resolution.
Hoping to connect with other DragonDictate users for ongoing discussion, problem solving.
Regards,
Joe

DragonDictate to NaturallySpeaking

Have you tryed DNS professional? I have converted all of my DD customers to DNS Pro years ago except those who really need descrete speech or those with voices that would not enroll. I am just curious as to what you have found that you could not control?

Emblematic of the lack of hands-free control is the fact that one can not even run the online Dragon NaturallySpeaking tutorial without needing to repeatedly turn on the microphone manually. The DragonDictate online tutorial was hands-free over 10 years ago.

NaturallySpeaking Handsfree

It sounds like you have little need for the tutorial? What else is your problem?

How would you know what need

How would you know what need I have for the tutorial?

DragonDictate

I assumed you were already a very experienced user so you could be the tutorial! Sorry if I offended. My point is once one is experienced the functions of the program are more important than a tutorial!

Hi Joe... I am also a

Hi Joe... I am also a DragonDictate user, Version 3.02 running on Windows 2000. Overall, it works pretty okay except for a few very minor issues like DragonDictate not being able to load the appropriate vocabulary and mouse commands being slow to react. But these problems do not occur very often. I have a friend who is running it with Windows XP and according to him, it also works pretty good.

Cheers!

Hi Quadric,

Hi Quadric,
Thanks for the response. I'm glad to hear that your friend is running DragonDictate successfully under Windows XP. I'm currently running under Windows 98 SE, and expect to receive a new computer (with Windows XP Professional) in a couple of weeks.
I experience the same types of (relatively minor) problems as you describe running DragonDictate and, in fact, I don't know whether the operation of Dragon NaturallySpeaking is any better than DragonDictate in this regard. I read various DNS forums regularly and I see the same sort of problems/limitations with DNS: slows down under certain conditions, doesn't recognize buttons and menus with certain applications etc etc. I'm on the lookout for a reasonably priced legal copy of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Ver. 7 or 8 for around $200 or less. If I find such I'll buy it and see what progress has been made since the last version I tried (Ver. 5). The only reason I'm trying to switch over from DragonDictate to Dragon NaturallySpeaking is the speed and accuracy of the Dragon NaturallySpeaking continuous speech dictation. I've tried that out, and it is truly impressive. Using DragonDictate I average about twenty-thirty words per minute including corrections and I think this would be much faster with Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
Two quick items:
1) my new computer will be coming with an Audigy sound card. (Not my choice). Over on the Knowbrainer forum I read about some people encountering problems with Audigy and Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Do you know anything about DragonDictate and Audigy?
2) in a previous message I described a problem I was having with the DragonDictate mouse motion not operating correctly at high screen resolution. It turns out that the problem was that I was changing the screen resolution while Dragon was already running. If I shut DragonDictate down and restart it *after* changing the screen resolution, everything works fine.
Regards,
Joe

Sorry Joe... I wouldn't know

Sorry Joe... I wouldn't know anything about the Audigy sound card. Have been using Creative SB Live all along without any problems.

I do have NaturallySpeaking installed on my system but I seldom use it. You are right... the speed and accuracy of continuous speech is really impressive but I don't do much dictation except for emails and sometimes posting to forums. Although there has been a lot of talk that NaturallySpeaking can be 100% hands free, I find it difficult to just switch over from DragonDictate. As a totally hands free user, I rely totally and have become so used to the command and control capabilities of DragonDictate. Maybe I am just plain LAZY.

It is actually possible to have both DragonDictate and NaturallySpeaking, and to switch from one to another by just saying a simple command. Just drop me an email if you want more details. This arrangement works well for me as I can retain the powerful command and control features of DragonDictate and enjoy the speed and accuracy of continuous speech dictation of NaturallySpeaking.

Cheers!

DragonDictate hands-free

Yes, I know- unfortunately this has become somewhat of a sensitive issue for me.
< rant on >
Over the years I've been seeing such talk and it seems to come from:
1) people selling Dragon NaturallySpeaking (this is certainly understandable)
2) people who have full use of the keyboard and mouse and have no idea what it really means to need to run the computer "hands-free".
If you read my other posts in this thread than you know that I refuse to take claims of "hands-free" seriously for a program where I can't even run the freaking tutorial. The developers of the Dragon line abandoned the disabled community when they brought out Dragon NaturallySpeaking Ver. 1, which lacked some of the most important hands-free features of DragonDictate, and discontinued development of DragonDictate. Eight versions later, hands free Dragon NaturallySpeaking has improved considerably but it's still not where DragonDictate was 8 years ago.

I've actually seen this suggestion before but haven't had the time to look into it. I'm getting dazed with having too many ways to go:
DragonDictate only
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional only
Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional with supplementary macro packages (like Knowbrainer)
Dragon NaturallySpeaking preferred with NatLink and Vocola
Switching between DragonDictate and Dragon NaturallySpeaking
If you're willing, it would be helpful to me and possibly to other readers of this forum, if you would briefly outline how it works. You might want to start a new topic as this current thread is starting to experience drift.

Switching between DragonDictate and NaturallySpeaking

Make sure that "Run Hands Free" is NOT checked under DragonDictate's Options/Hands Free section.

Add [Switch to NaturallySpeaking] command to the System/Global Commands vocabulary in DragonDictate. Check "Execute Following Script" and add the following to the Resulting Action box:

SetMicrophone 0
wait 2000
SendSystemKeys "{F11}"

The microphone hot key for DragonDictate should be set to {NumKey+} and the microphone hotkey for NaturallySpeaking should be set to {F11}.

Create a "Switch to DragonDictate" command in your NaturallySpeaking voice files.

1. From the NaturallySpeaking's Tools menu, select "Add New Command" (this requires the Professional Edition of Dragon NaturallySpeaking).
2. Enter "Switch to DragonDictate" (without the quotes) as the "MyCommand Name".
3. For Group, select "User-defined".
4. For Availability, check "Global".
5. For Command Type, select "Advanced Scripting".
5. Enter the following three lines into the Script field between Sub Main and End Sub:

SetMicrophone 0
Wait 2
SendSystemKeys "{NumKey+}"

6. Click Save.

When in DragonDictate, just say [Bring Up Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8] to launch NaturallySpeaking. NaturallySpeaking will come up with some error messages about not being able to switch the microphone on. Don't worry... you are still in DragonDictate and can close the error windows. Now saying [Switch to NaturallySpeaking] will switch the microphone off in DragonDictate and microphone on in NaturallySpeaking. When you want to exit NaturallySpeaking, remember to switch control back to DragonDictate first by saying [Switch to DragonDictate] and then use DragonDictate to close NaturallySpeaking.

Well, this worked for me the last time I tried it. Hope it will be able to help you when you are trying out NaturallySpeaking for the first time. At least you know you are able to switch back to DragonDictate if you get lost or something goes wrong in NaturallySpeaking.

Sorry... couldn't find the place to start a new thread. Maybe someone can help copy and paste this in the appropriate place. Thanks.
