How to double-click and select a drop-down list

I know these are two very basic questions, but can anybody tell me
- what to say to make the mouse double-click, and right click?
-what to say to click on the little down arrow of a drop-down menu?
I'm using Dragon preferred version 7.
Any help would be very much appreciated Smiling

May,

Simple enough. Mouse commands are the same regardless of what version you are using.

1. To double click the mouse, simply say "mouse double click"

2. To right click the mouse, simply say "mouse right click"

That's all there is to it. Have fun Eye-wink

Chuck,

Thank you! I had a feeling it would be something very simple.

May, To respond to your

May,

To respond to your question about the drop-down menu, for example I just did the following and it worked perfectly:
1. "Go to Address" (the address in Internet Explorer's window)
2. "Drop down the list"
3. "Move down 5" Or however how many down you want to move. In a State drop down list say the state's name and it should work.
4. In the case of the drop-down-list for the address bar, I would say move down five and then say, "Press enter"

Martin, Thank you for your

Martin,

Thank you for your reply. I tried your instructions, but they don't seem to be working. I think there might be two reasons for this:

1. since I installed the new version of Internet Explorer the command "go to address bar" seems to have stopped working.
2. I'm not sure I explained problem very well (my technical vocabulary is not so big!) If, for example, I wanted to open up the drop-down list at the top of this page that has "threaded list -- expanded" as the first item, what should I do? I've tried simply saying threaded list expanded but that doesn't seem to work.

Thanks again for your help,

May

Generally pressing the Function 4 key in any Windows application, when the cursor is in the window, will drop down the list of choices. The PF4 key can be depressed by saying 'Press function 4' or 'Type function 4'.

Saying "press f four" or "type f four" will also work. I've tested them in IE 7.

Thanks, Bruce and Chuck, the

Thanks, Bruce and Chuck, the F4 key is really useful. But, if there is more than one drop down list in the window, how do I get from the first one to the second? For example, on this page if I say press f four, the address bar drops down, but I can't than find a way of getting to the next drop down list headed "threaded list -- expanded". I've tried saying press f4 again, next f4, tab etc but nothing seemed to work.

May,

We need an example of a webpage where you are having this kind of difficulty. It just is not possible to provide you with a solution without being able to see exactly what it is that you are having difficulty with.

Hi Chuck,

I think you missed the fact that May did provide a specific example of a page where she was having the problem -- the very page you are viewing now. What she wants is a way to move from the address bar drop-down list to a drop down list in the web page being viewed. I don't know of any way to do this myself without using the mouse to change the focus from the web browser to the page being viewed.

Meph

Thanks Meph. Missed that one. That's what I get for concentrating on the question rather than on the thread.

Nevertheless, I'm running IE 7 which effectively removes the Internet Explorer commands from the Command Browser anyway. But, navigating to drop down list boxes is at best problematic if there are no links to them. In that sense, you're right.

I'm without DNS right now to try this, the WinDoze machine is still down.

The names for those dropdowns are (left to right order): "mode", "order", "comments_per_page".

Might you be able to say the name of the specific dropdown to move there?

Just a thought.

The "mode", "order" and

The "mode", "order" and "comment" names don't work in the combos I tried -- could be an indicator of my lack of inventiveness.

In a more pedestrian mode, I think if you just Tab enough you'll get there eventually. Problem is the "tab path" depends on your browser and whatever add-ins it has. For example, in my Firefox 2 with a Google Toolbar and Search, I can say "Tab 5" and get to the "mode" field -- at least on this page.

However, if I back-tab, I wind up taking a different path back through a lot of links on the page. Still, it looks like one needs to find out how many tabs it takes from the address bar on a given page in a given browser and try that till it stops working.

Bruce

Saying tab seems to work,

Saying tab seems to work, although with my version of Dragon and Internet Explorer it takes numerous tabs to get to where I went to be. Does anyone know an easier way of doing this, or is it just something I have to live with?

Yes there is a faster way.

Yes there is a faster way. Do not say the opening and closing quotes in the following. They are merely used to show what the actual words are that you say.

Try doing this:

1) Have the desired drop down menu visible on the screen.

2) Say "mouse grid". The mouse grid should show on the screen.

3) Say the number in each grid to cause one of the grids to be on top of the desired drop down menu.

4) When you are on top of the desired drop down menu, say "click"

If there are multiple drop down menus, as on here, you can say "press tab" to move forward to the next one. To move back a drop down menu, say "press shift tab".

Hope that helps!

Yes, there may be an easier way, May!

This series of commands worked for me (IE 6, DNS 7.3 professional),
on the list boxes on the page I was using to view your thread:

1. "list box"
- puts the focus in the list box on the web page, with a little numbered flag beside it.
Note that on the Speech Computing page I am viewing, there are three list boxes in a row, one next in the other. The box on the left is flagged number one. The next two boxes are numbered two and three. You cannot see these numbers because the list boxes are too close together. However, you can at this point move the focus to one of the other boxes by saying "2" or "3," or possibly "choose three." Webmaster take note Smiling

2. "Drop list"
- does the same as pressing the F4 key (Martin's command would've worked without the words "down the".

3. "Move down 2"
- or whatever, to get to your choice.

4. "Press enter"
- activates your choice and closes the list box.

5. "Save Settings"
On this particular page, in order see the results of my choice, I have to press the "Save Settings" button. Some other web pages respond as soon as you make your choice in the box.

I'll see if I can do anything with those list boxes and their width on screen.

I'm using Internet Explorer 7 with Dragon NaturallySpeaking Version 8 Professional.

On my machine, the numbers were easily visible overlaying the arrows of the previous box. Thus there was no problem selecting them.

Don, what browser are you using?

Well that solved the original question, but I have a complicating wrinkle: Everything is copacetic in Firefox 2.0, but in IE 7 none of the changes I make in the drop-down boxes stick -- that is, they revert to whatever was the default when I landed on the page. I don't know if that's just a quirk in my set up or a general problem -- probably the former but I thought it was worth mentioning.

First, are you remembering to save them before leaving the page? If you are then try logging out of this site then deleting all cookies in IE7. Sounds like one got warped.

I had to delete cookies when I first went to IE7. It wouldn't let ME log in. Needless to say I got to the root of the problem rapidly.

Works ok for me after that initial reset.

Do you have any software installed that would affect cookies?

I am using Internet Explorer, version 6.0.2900...sp2

Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 7.30... sp2.

I can see roughly eight to 10 pixels change just to the left of each list box when I issue the "list box" command; so I know that DNS is recognizing the list boxes and numbering them. The flags are appearing to the left of the drop-down list boxes. Most of the number two and number three flags are covered up by the preceding list box. The number one flag is partially covered by its own list box and butted up against the left edge of the screen, but the number is still legible.

If later versions of DNS are better at showing these flags then there is probably no reason to change the arrangement of the boxes on your site. After all, how many other Luddites like me could there possibly be? Smiling
